I received an early 80's Mini 14 from my sister in law when my brother passed away 4 years ago. I am just now really looking through his collection to see what he had. I noticed that his Mini has a cracked gas block in the top piece. The crack is about 3/4ths of the width of the top piece. Is there any danger shooting this rifle? Can just the top piece be replaced or does the whole block need to be replaced? If replaced...any suggestions for upgrades or just go with a stock gas block?

Thank you!!

First I would look at the Ruger website and get the owners's manual online and find the part # and then give Ruger a call and see if they sell the part.

I don't have a mini-14 but I have looked at this site and they have everything for the mini-14 including tunable gas blocks and the part you describe. scroll down.

Thanks for the input. I have looked at Accuracy Systems before when I was thinking about sending them whole gun and customizing the crap out of it. But then I came to my senses and thought I'd rather have a mini that works well and save the $1,000 for something else.

Sinply contact Ruger customer service, tell them you have a safety concern about firing the rifle and think it is unsafe.

Would like to return it to the factory to have it looked at.

Bet they will be happy to fix it for free. Ask for a call tag and see what happens.....

Trying to help and save you some denaro as well.

They are great people (Newport Service), ask for Brenda Page Sousy, she is the real force behind customer service there.

I sent Ruger an email that was promptly replied to. They said, "send us the gun and we'll take a look at it and give you a quote." I didn't want to incur the cost of sending it there and back and then get a bid from them and end up not having them do it. Asking for a call tag is good idea. I didn't get the impression that they would cover it. However, they might. But, I didn't want to find out they wouldn't after already sending them the gun.

Thank you!!

I'm sure calling and asking what the charge is to replace the gas block isn't a state secret. Odd they didn't quote you on the phone. No matter how much you spend on a Mini, it'll always be one. Great truck/beater rifle, but for accuracy....look elsewhere.
