I’ll start by saying that my wife and I each qualify for the handicap tags for our vehicles and have them. She was born with cerebral palsy that hardly slowed her down in her youth. Now in her early 50s it is taking a toll. She normally holds on to my arm while walking across open areas. I walk assisted by a cane due to injuries from a car accident. Both of us suffer from pain daily. We are a mess but we have a very happy life together. I would say happier than most couples we know. We also know that we are a bit of a spectacle when we are out together. So we make the best of it.
A while back we went to the pharmacy. There was no close parking so here we go stumbling across the parking lot. A very much older lady in her best grandmotherly way was ever so distraught for us and began with the “you poor things” and whatnots. I assured her that we were fine. She was very kindly, but was actually putting on more of a show than we were.
Later in the store we were in line at the drug window near the concerned granny. She asked what had happened to cause such a sweet couple to find themselves in such a shape. With the truth being too boring, I told her that we had both been hit by stray bullets during a bank robbery shootout! Not only did this get her attention, but her husband is now showing great interest in us for the first time. As well as the other 10 or so people around. I then said, “But don’t worry! We have both learned our lessons and will not be robbing any more banks!”
It was then that the look of pity was wiped from Granny’s face and replaced with something else. She was pissed! Her husband yelled out in laughter and swatted me on the back so hard that he nearly nocked me and the wife both over. He then shouted to her , “ That will teach you to mind your own business and leave people alone!” She stormed off with him behind her. Others in line laughed but I did get a raised eyebrow from my Miss.
Papaw showed back up shortly and sits down in one of the few chairs available but never went up to the window. A bit later one of the ladies that worked there came out from behind the counter and asked him if he was waiting on a prescription. He answered,
“No, I’m just resting while I wait on my wife. She is mad at me and locked me out of the car and I can’t stand around all day waiting on her to get over it!”
Everyone laughed again!
