Grocery shopping was always "women's work" for married folks when I was growing up, and it didn't involve complaining. I don't remember a trip to the gun shop or sporting goods store ever involving a stop at the market, either. As for the ranters, I recall my Granny going on and on one time, making me wonder why my grandfather put up with such behavior. Right up until a couple more minutes had passed, and Grandpa said, in a very calm voice, "Now Virginia, that's enough!" and she STHU right then and there. Hmmm... even my Mom didn't know what kind of "big stick" he carried, but said she'd seen that same scenario growing up, though it was a rare occurrence.

Was it a better time? I dunno, probably arguable at best, but I hear more people expressing nostalgia for the '50s than anything so far in the 21st century. Just sayin'... :lol:

She's HAPPY she sent him to the store. SHE got a new gun & he paid for it.

Miss Penny & I enjoy doing all kinds of stuff together. Grocery shopping,,, thrift shopping, yard sales, general shopping,, and yes,,, even going to gun shops etc. If she finds something she likes in a gun shop,,, well,,,,,, let's just say she has her own collection of goodies,,,!

The point is since he didn't bring home the bacon as he was supposed to, I get the rifle. My main problem is I know that the guy he bought from is "sanitizing" his house for when his son gets out of prison and he has this really ancient Browning semi-automatic 12 gauge hubby should have asked about. Not to mention he bought way too cheap off a neighbor with no choice but to sell leaving me with the decision of how much more I should send the guy to make it a fair sale. I haven't checked yet but by my estimate hubby paid less than half what it's worth at $300.

At least you are trying to do the right thing on the deal.. There is always someone out there that will ALWAYS take advantage of someone else's misfortune in life.. I know first hand.. But they were such good religious people I was told.. Yeah right.. :roll:

I know more of the religious types that would have no hesitation to steal the pennies off their dead mother's eyes.. But they are such good folk ya know.. I applaud your efforts in doing the right thing and paying what it's worth.. I can respect that..

And you are not a bad woman either.. I have seen many people over the years that wouldn't hesitate to capitalize on another man's misery in life.. They would gladly do it, if they could profit off it.. YOU actually have conscience and decency enough to say, "HEY, This isn't right, and I don't like it." And you are willing to do the right thing to make it right.. That shows integrity in my opinion.. And I have much respect for you because of it.. Perhaps there is hope for humanity yet.. I believe you to be an honest person Selena.. And I salute you for your attempts to make right on this..

I originally wasn't going to comment on this topic since it had nothing to do with me personally.. But when I see someone doing the right thing, I just have to recognize them for that.. It isn't every day I see this type of thing in my life..

Ok, this thread took a bit of a different turn somewhat.

The way I read the first post by Selena,,, I figured she was saying things in a way that meant to be a bit of a joke & humorous because she got a nice gun.
But as she has added more,, I see she does seem to have gotten a bit upset because her hubby failed to actually buy the groceries, AND took advantage of a bad situation. I applaud her for confiscating the gun!
But moreso,,, I see the good in her for wanting to make things right,,, and offer to pay more even after the fact.
This thread was found right after I read the one about people's trust in institutions. And it came as no surprise in that thread that Congress & religion were at the bottom of the trust list. As GP-100 has mentioned often,, he has seen a lot of supposedly Christians take advantage of others,,, but if we are all honest,, most of us can say the same thing. Selena,, has proven she is better than that,,, and GP-100 appreciates that as well.
Two opposing views,,, yet both appreciate true Christian beliefs,, when shown like this. Selena for doing the right thing,, and GP-100 for recognizing a good Christian.

Ok, all the deep thinking over,,, I'm sure we all want to know how this plays out. I'd assume Selena will approach the neighbor, offer more for the rifle,,, AND politely inquire about the shotgun??????

At the moment my brother has the weapon for evaluation. He tells me it has been "rebarrelled" by an armory and has given me an estimate of value between 500 to 800 dollars. Later today I'll take it to a gunsmith friend and ask his opinion on price as well. When I settle on a price I can live with I'll make out a check to the neighbor and have Dad go with me to give it to him. Both for the fact that Dad is more likely to talk the guy into taking the extra and the fact that Dad would get more enjoyment out of the shotgun than we would.

I confess my sins to my priest once a week and feel no need to do so here. However, and I'm sure Mr. Wright would agree, there is no such thing as a good Christian or a bad one. We are all born with the taint of the original sin and fall short of the Divine. My actions in this case are simple, if I were in a position where I needed to sell my possessions through no choice or fault of my own I would want my neighbors to treat me fairly. I have neither right nor reason to expect that if I do not do the same. My spiritualist Dad, my agnostic uncle, my Baptist grandmother and Sister Beatrice all insisted this was how life was lived. These actions are not "because" I follow Christ but "why" I follow him. No one or no thing is all good or all bad. We are all human beings doing the best we can with what God gave us to work with.

I went to a gun show once and came home with a mountain dulcimer. It was about 5 years before I could turn that $100 purchase into a $250 sale.

Contender, in the all's well that ends well department, my Dad offered the option of his keeping the man's firearms until the time his son has gotten back on his feet and no longer has to live there. Likewise I am "renting" the Enfield until that time comes and it will be returned. I also seem to be "babysitting" (riflesitting?) A Krag and a Winchester so old it makes my 92 look like a baby. Not the ideal solution I suppose but at least he has the chance to keep possessions he has gathered over the course of a lifetime.

Besides, I owe him,.,, When I was 11 or 12 I talked him into donating his end-rows for a season so the CYO could plant potatoes to donate for the food pantries. He was kind enough to give us a lot of advice on both planting, caring and harvesting the crop. Not to mention just putting up with us "invading" his place. When a priest in one of the suburbs of Chicago decided to include his CYO we had almost 40 people at any one of the donated end-rows at any one time with 3/4 of them having zero experience being on a farm. Since I was out of foster care less than a year and still not quite used to the isolation of this place the project was a life-saver to me. He also insisted every successful harvest required a celebration picnic that we had in his back yard. Anybody willing to share his home, heart and nearly a half mile of land 70 some foot wide with a bunch of town kids deserves beacoup consideration afterwards.

I realize this thread has been buried since July and probably has the odor of decay but our neighbor's son was able to find gainful employment and has moved from his Dad's house. Dad and I have returned all of the guy's property even though I hated to see the "17" go.

I wish all my neighbors here on the board have a happy & productive New Year. As you reflect on 2018 I hope you will celebrate your many blessings rather than to dwell on the disappointments. Please pray for Mr. Trump to receive and follow God's divine guidance and for Him to protect our country.
