Mainspring

Is the mainspring for the series 6 revolvers the same as or very close to the mainspring on the Vaqueros? Can a Vaquero mainspring be used as a suitable substitute on a series 6 revolver? Thanks, Dennis

I do not think they are the same. The "Security-Six" series, which included the Speed-Six & the Service-Six were discontinued in 1988. The Vaqueros didn't come out until 1993. And I'm sure the power to operate the hammer in each is a bit different as well.
I'm not saying you couldn't try it & what happens, especially if you have a spare spring to sacrifice.

In looking at the Wolff gunsprings site the Vaquero is stated to have a 23 lb mainspring and a Six Series 16 lb standard. The other aspect to consider is mainspring length. If you need a Six Series mainspring order one from Wolff either in the 16 lb standard or 14 lb reduced pull weight. Some other people on the Ruger boards claim a GP100 mainspring will also fit the Six. Standard for the GP is 14 lbs with 9, 10, 11 and 12 lb reduced power mainsprings available. No question that it will "fit". But if the lengths are different there will be problems with light primer strikes.

One poster claimed the 11 lb GP mainspring would work. I don't know, just what I read. It seems mainspring length varies not only across models but even for the same model depending upon the weight rating. When I get my Speed Six back plan to try the 11 lb mainspring in it out of curiosity. Still, cutting mainsprings can give FTFs as noted. It may also influence smoothness of trigger pull due to the amount of preload or lack thereof.

I used a Wolff reduced weight main spring in a model 66 Taurus 357Mag (11#) and get misfires shooting double action, which is OK because I always shoot single action. I wanted a lighter hammer pull for shooting SA and I got it.
