All of my hunting rifles are SS MKII rifles with the non boat paddle/skeleton synthetic stocks. I had a sling stud rip out of one of my rifle forearms while in use. The rifle is SN#787-94xxx made in 2000 according to Rugers site. This is the second time I have dealt with this. This exact thing happened to a 300 Win mag of mine several years ago. The stud strips the hole as it comes out. This is obviously a bad/cheap design.
So, I called Ruger CS and explained the problem to them. I explained that the same thing had happened on another one of these rifles and back then [2004?]they just sent me a new stock. We went through all of the rifle details, SN#, cal, etc. I emphasized that it was a MKII and not a newer AW Hawkeye. She was helpful and agreed to send me a new stock at NO CHARGE. Sweet.
Stock showed up and it looks like a newer Hawkeye stock based on the recoil pad. There was a rice sized piece of plastic loose rattling around in the buttstock. Quite loud for such a small chunk. So I had to pull the pad and rattle it out, annoying but easy enough to fix.
Looks like they redesigned the front swivel area. Note the difference in how the stud attaches. Old style is on the left:
So on to my question...does anyone know when this sling stud change was made? Was it made to the MKII stocks at some point or was it a Hawkeye design change? Reason I ask is that I have several other rifles and it will save me from having to pull them all apart to inspect if there was a date cutoff. If it comes down to it, I am going to pull them all apart and call Ruger for all new stocks if needed. It is a safety hazard IMO. I was lucky both times in that nothing happened but it would be easy to have an accident when you lose control of the gun like I did. I would love to know what year Ruger got tired of sending out new stocks.
Also, did the new pads come about from the hawkeye as well? Although not correct for the gun, I like the new pad better. Old pad is bottom:
