So starting my rifle hunting back in early 1980s.

I had my choice was down to 2 rifles a M77 in 30-06 or one .338WM as I remember had rifled sights.

I opted for the .30-06 for 3 reasons, First was the cost of ammo, Second it "Didn't" have the rifle sights, third .338WM might be overkill for whitetail. (Well not if I had been reloading back then.)

I replaced my original M77 in .30-60 with a 1998 vintage Stainless M77 Mark II w/paddle boat stock.

So I got to thinking I would like to punish myself and get a Stainless M77 Mark II in.338WM, and I started looking for one with rifle sights.

I have found a few in lesser calibers but nothing in the .338WM with rifle sights.

Did Ruger make a Mark II Stainless with rifle sights in .338W, or am I confused?

AFAIK, Ruger made two such different stainless Model 77 MKII's.

* The Model 77RSFP All-Weather Stainless rifle in .338WM with open sights & synthetic stock.

* The Model 77RSBZ in .338WM with open sights & laminated stock .

.

I've got a .338 WM with open sights, stainless and in the boat paddle stock. It took me about two years to find one. They're rare, but they do exist.

Someone I work with, sent me a link to one. The link was 4 years old

So I guess I did remember correctly. Going to keep looking

Thanks guys

Mine was built from parts, but the barrel and sights are from a factory build and i suspect from a MKII. The fluting was done later.

L-to-R, .337WM MKII, .300WM MKII, .30-06 MKII

I agree that the recoil is pretty bad on the boat paddle stocks. I blame the relatively narrow buttpad and the fact that it has almost no cushion. Pachmayr and Limbsaver used to make prefit replacement pads, and both were an improvement. I bet it would be hard to locate one now though. I replaced my boat paddle stocks with Hogue stocks. That way I got a full length aluminum bedding block, a soft and effective recoil pad, and I can keep the factory stock in good condition, which will be nice if I should ever decide to sell the rifle.

Only if you don't look. Limbsaver still makes them.

I.had a boat paddle stock on my stainless 338's as terrible to shoot bad not accurate .I put a Boyes laminated stock.in.it sweetest shooting.338 and shot 3/4 inch groups at 200 yards awesome! I sold that dang boat paddle stock and never missed it !

A few years back I took my boatpaddle/stainless .338W and .30-06 rifles to the range for a last scope check before elk season. After checking both at 100 yards I put clay pigeons up at 600.

Nailed a clay with both rifles, total of 3 shots with the .338 WM, 2 with the .30-06. May not be target rifles, but they can shoot.

My stainless 338 use to be paddle stock with the boyds laminated stock is the second most accurate rifle I.Have behind a weatherby 338-378 weatherby accumarks .I shot a 3/4 inch group at 200 yards with factory ammo with just a 3x9 Nikon monarch on.It .Those paddle stocks are good for wacking porcupines and paddling.the canoe if you lose your paddle not.made for 338 win mag shooting.!

I've limited use of the 338W but found it unusable! I gott rid of it due to the exeisive recoil. I later lucked into an accuracy international in 338 lupula and later into Barrett. Without a good compensator with a relatively heavy rifle the 338 is not useable!

The 338 win mag Ruger 77 with the laminated stock kicks way less.My nephews who were 12 at thermos and my.old gf loved shooting.it .The paddle stock with the 338 is like a boxing match brutal .I don't know who invented and told they were wonderful and magical stocks .I didn't even like it on my 364 win mag Ruger 77 'i know I don't miss it that's for sure .My brother got one of the last stainless 338 laminated 77 Rugers and I.got one of the last plastic stock.ones with the stock.soon.to.be replaced with a laminated one !
