For the Frontier owners here -
I just picked up one of these great guns (more of a Scout rifle than the current Scout rifles IMHO), and I'm about to work up some loads.

My only question is how to flinch your nose away from the bolt when working the action. I was learnt to keep your head down and sight picture true when cycling, but the short 12 1/2" LOP and longish-for-short action bolt throw put my nose and eye socket in the danger zone!

Any experience worth sharing, or do I train myself to raise my face off the stock while cycling?

Otherwise, I really really like this handy rifle!

The way you were "learnt" is the right way IMO. If you are taking the bolt in the face the length of pull is too short for you. A thicker replacement pad and/or spacer is how I would fix it.

+1

i take my face off the stock when cycling the bolt. never need more than one shot anyway :)

So the whole "scout rifle" concept is fubar with the rifleman's method of bolt actions?

Any instructors care to comment?

It wasn't. The Ruger Frontier is a hunting rifle with a 12.5" LOP. (orig post) . I just have to learn to drop the muzzle to cycle the bolt. Just a question here in case someone else had experienced the same.
thx all.

If it were me, I would follow Silent Sam's advice and lengthen the LOP.

Dropping the rifle from the shoulder to recycle lengthens the recovery time. This might not be significant for you.

My 358 Frontier felt a bit short out of the box and after I nearly wore the scope with the first round, I put a slip-on pad over the existing pad to see how much more I had to add.
In doing so it now feels perfect so I have hunted with it, looks a bit funny but it works great at least until after the season ends and then I will lengthen it properly...
