M77 Compact barrel contour???

Is the barrel taper of the Compact the same as say the M77 All Weather? What I mean is, if you were to shorten an All Weather barrel from 22" to 16", like on the Compact, would both barrels have the same diameter at the muzzle? Another way of asking the same question is, is the barrel on a compact model just a cut down Sporter barrel, or does the Compact have a unique taper? If I had an All Weather or Sporter I could just measure the diameter of the barrel 6" back from the muzzle and know for sure...anybody willing to do that? Thanks!

Ooops...I realize the Compact actually has a 16.5" barrel not 16". So I should be measuring 5.5" back from the muzzle.

I not sure about the contour,but the stock from my 77 stainless .350 fits my compact just fine,other than it is a little longer

That's what I was hoping but that really surprises me. So the Compact barrel is just a cut down Sporter barrel. In your example I'd have suspected there would have been an excess of space around the barrel when fitting a Compact action and barrel into a regular stock. If the Compact uses a smaller diameter, more tapered barrel then there should be excessive space around the barrel. At worst you're just fully free floated. Thanks.

No. The Compact barrel contour is very different and much smaller than the all weather would be if it was cut down to the same length.

Uh oh, first I got confirmation then I got a no. This is what I'm finding elsewhere too, even on this forum in other threads. I'm more inclined to believe that the Compact has a thinner barrel than the All Weather or Sporter then I hear from someone that's actually swapped stocks and it "fits just fine"???? I guess no one here actually owns both rifles and can measure the barrel diameter at different points and provide the numbers. I sent Ruger the same question I posed here. Maybe I can get a definitive answer from them. By the way I don't doubt either one of the posters kind enough to answer my question, it's just that I now have conflicting information that only heightens my desire to know the facts.

If you shortened an Ultra-light barrel to the same length as a Compact (16.25" or 16.50", I can't remember the exact length) even it would have a slightly larger muzzle diameter than the Compact.

Even thinner than the Ultra light??? That's THIN! Oh well, I was hoping the Compact had a heavier barrel. I'll bet king j's compact barrel in a regular stock looks like a soda straw in a rain gutter with all the empty space around it. Maybe he'll post a photo.

I currently own a 260 Compact and a 7mm-08 Ultra-light. The compact does not have a thinner profile than the ultra-light. Its exactly the opposite. I know that both are still wearing their factory barrels. The 260 was ordered and purchased from Wal-mart. The 7mm-08 is the target grey model. No chance either has non-stock barrels. Best friend has a compact in 7mm-08, same profile as my 260.
