I took my nephews shooting this afternoon,,,,they got to shoot my 1943 Springfield M-1 Garand...they loved it..they both talked about seeing it in movies but had never fired one..so they each put about 40 rounds through it..

I fired "Expert" with both the M14 and then the M1. Two of the finest rifles ever produced in my opinion.

I would love to own a mint M-1 Garand. The problem is that my want list and my budget are not in agreement.

I fired one at Whittington on May 4th at the 660yd bison target. My friend (owner of the Garand) was looking with binoculars and did not seen the round hit. :oops:
I agree that the Garand and the M-14 are very solid rifles. We used the 14 in basic.

Loved the M-14 in Basic; Never got to fire an M-1.

Yeah,that was the one. I was recalling 660yds from something my friend said but recall often fails me. I only fired at it once and it was on a stand. :oops: None of us fired it much;we shot his SKS,Freedom Arms 454 and two 9s although he had about ten weapons total. I only had my 9;we shot a little the day before near his house.
The only considerable time I've fired a Garand was in 82 or 83 at Ft Meade (NRA event) at 200 rds at a 200yd,one rd at a time. We worked the trench below the targets part of the time;I missed the second day's shooting,where it was more varied.

the Whittington silhouette range, a can full of bandoleers, my shooting mat and my July 1952 IHC Garand I bought from the DCM for $165 is about the most fun I can have with my clothes on
all I needed was some little kid to go pick up all the spent brass the rifle slung all over the firing line at the end of the day so my fat belly did not have to bend over to pick them up
All you card carrying NRA members, if you have not visited the Whittington and shot for a couple of days, you are really missing out on the best perk of paying your dues

That place is hard to believe...a shooter's paradise. We also drove back and saw the coal mine and remains of it's little town. He usually picks-up some pieces of coal for his wood stove;it's at ground level scattered about.

I picked up one at my LGS yesterday, I have always been a fan of the M1, but never bought one.
I closed my eyes and shouldered it, when I opened my eyes the sights were perfectly aligned. I did it five times, and four out of five the sights were perfect. Amazing rifle, someday I'll have to shoot one. Ed

I have an IH Garand and a Polytech M14S, but would love to own a Tanker Garand in .308.
I bought my M-1 through the CMP when they were on $240 or so. I refinished the stock, lightly and have replaced a few parts over the years to make it 100% Springfield, as best I can tell. It was made in 1943 and rebarreled in 1947. It's very accurate and I've killed a few deer with it..I use those 150 grain polymer tipped bullets, the lead tipped sometimes don't want to feed well. When I reload for it I use the 150 grain Winchester FMJ.

YEP , it is true, Patton called it the greatest battle instrument ever devised and what I know I can do with it under all kinds of conditions, if SHTF, it is the first thing slung on board the bug out rideDGW1949 said:

Here is my Winchester and friends. I like the AP ammo little more zip and a lot more punch :wink:
