I just learned of the death of a friend of mine recently. The man was Herschel D. "Dee" Moss, of Jackson, Tennessee.

Dee was one of a group of fine young boys I had the pleasure of teaching many, many years ago when they were pre-teens. This at a Baptist Church I attended at the time. There were three boys especially, one of whom was my own nephew. Shortly after I lost track of them all except my nephew. But Dee went on to become an artist and especially a wood carver.

I got re-acquainted with him a few years ago when my wife and I were on one of our "rides." We found him in the welcome center of Casey Jones Village in Jackson, Tennessee, where he had a studio. We made several trips there, to eat at The Old Country Store and visit nearby Hatchie Nationa Wildlife Refuge. Dee carved birds, especially ducks, and one bald eagle that has been displayed in several places. They possess a realism that make them look as if their feathers would ruffle it you blew on them. Dee was the only man I knew who had been to Timbuktu, in Africa. Nearly got arrested for praying on their motel balcony, as they were Christians in one of the most holy Islamic cities.

Always sad to hear of the loss of an old friend or relative. This strikes home for me because the other day my extended family had a Zoom get together. My brother organized it and invited all of our first cousins, and invited the children or grandchildren of those cousins to participate if they wanted to. He also invited all of our second cousins (not sure if that is right designation for the children of the first cousins of my Mom). When the Zoom meeting time and date came, all of my living first cousins as well as my brother and sister participated. When I was a kid I had 14 cousins just on my Mom's side. Now I am down to the three that were part of this get together. Some that are gone were much older than me, but several were considerably younger. The realization of how few of us are left gets me a bit discouraged and sad. My sympathies to you at this time of loss.

The last few days I have been doing genealogy work on my family tree. It involves a lot of googling. I found two first cousins and a 102 year old aunt that died recently. I left home (a couple thousand miles away) about 60 years ago and except for a few scattered trips back have been out of touch. One cousin that died was about six years younger than me. Hadn't seen him in all that time. Startled me as in the obit he looked more like my dad than I do. Doing that genealogy work makes you more aware of our soon demise! I had done it many years ago but lost it all as I wasn't computer literate and am having to start all over. It`s hard when you cant read German, Russian and Polish! My grandfather raised 17 kids! (Two wives) 6 by his first wife who died young, one step son by his next wife a young widow he married and my dad was the first of ten more kids! Like fathers day in Watt`s, it`s the definition of "Mass confusion".

Sad to hear of your loss.
Been thinking off and on the last few years that those who haven't moved away over the years are passing on. I'm finding most of my friends are younger than I am.

Sorry to hear of the loss. Great talent. I would be interested to know the show he came to in Maryland. I worked with the judges at the Ward World Wildfowl carving competition from the late 70's till the early 90s. If he was at that show I may have met him at some point and just don't remember.
