Local man honored

A local man,, someone I know personally,, was honored today by the Army Chief of Staff with the "Outstanding Civilian Service Award." It was for his foundation of the "Honor Flight" program 10 years ago,, to make sure all WWII vets got to see the WWII Memorial in Washington DC.
It has expanded to now take Vietnam Vets to DC as well.
Jeff Miller,, just a nice guy locally,, dedicated to helping Veterans,, started this and it has grown to almost all 50 states. If you are ever in Hendersonville NC,, "Miller Dry Cleaning" off King street, (one street over from Main,) is his business.

Bill,,, that is exactly why Jeff started doing this. He wanted to honor the Veterans,, and let them see the memorial built in their honor,,,before they passed. He's passionate about it.
As far as we know,, any WWII vet who is/was alive anywhere the Honor Flight was done from was able to visit Washington if they wished to go.
It has grown to now take the Vietnam Vets,, offering them the same free trip. It's a one day affair,, and they are well taken care of. My son't FIL was on the most recent trip this past weekend.

My cousin who was a 82nd AB vet vietnam era escorted uncle Art. I think he said all had to be pushed in a wheelchair by a escort. It was a long one day affair. They flew from Oshkosh Wisconsin to DC and back, a long day. My cousin told Art, you get out and push me! I know both really liked it.

It was a blessing to have the ww2 vets around while I was growing up. I treasure everyone of them I've met. All where gentleman. It's sad to see them passing.

I only remember 1 ww1 vet, my great grandfather. I spent a lot of afternoons following him around. I don't remember him ever saying a single word to me. Still I'm glad I got to know him.

Congratulations to your friend. I'm glad he thought of the project, and actually got it to work. Pretty amazing.

I want to encourage anybody who has a Vet in their family who served in Vietnam,, to consider accepting the invitation to do the Honor Flight if offered. It is powerful,, and many many of them may never get a better chance to see it.

My father, a WW ll vet was killed by a drunk driver ( fourth DUI). I don’t know how he would have felt about it, but certainly would have encouraged him to go. Kudos to Mr Miller!
