Like to get subs suggestions on a bore sighter

The grandson in law has recently purchased a hunting rifle in 308. The gun has yet to be fired and he has hinted that he would like to have a bore sighting tool to be used in installing his telescopic site. Anyone here would like to give suggestions on either an in the muzzle bore sight or one that would be installed in the chamber? Any suggestions would be appreciated with experience and also trying to keep the cost reasonable for something of quality.

I have owned a few over the years. I prefer the in the bore type,, with the set of different bore inserts, as it can be used in almost all calibers easily. An in the chamber type is specific for that one caliber.

Either way, a bore sighting tool is just a place to adjust to get things close. Actual shooting is the final adjustment. (I add this because I've seen too many people get a new gun, get it bore sighted, and never shoot it prior to hunting with it. they think it's zeroed, when it's not.)

I’ve used Bushnell’s that have multiple arbors for different calibers.
I’ve never had an issue getting pretty close to spot on with them.
There are other manufacturers that make similar units. I’ve only used
Bushnell.

A bolt action rifle can easily be 'bore sited' by simply supporting the rifle, removing the bolt, and looking through the bore. Align crosshairs with what's seen through the bore and it's close enough to be 'on paper'.
I use a laser 'collet' type as described by Contender. Fits .17-.50 with the included inserts. Mine is a 10+ year old 'el-cheapo' (maybe Bushnell) with a fairly weak laser but it's good enough for 25 yards which is all that's required for 'on paper'.
Note that I used the term 'on paper' twice as this is important. Bore siting is just the first step in zeroing which I'm sure you already know.
