Side by the side the top strap of the 3" model looks a lot thicker than the 2". Is the difference in the thickness of the metal frame or just the plastic stuff that Ruger pours over the gun?

If I just want a range plinker, that will probably experience very high round count, is the 3" a better choice because of a more robust frame? Otherwise I have no preference 2"/3" fixed or adjustable.

When I think of plinking, the LCR is about the last gun I'd think of. To each their own.

Ya, it's not the most comfortable platform to shoot. A few cylinders to keep in "shape" and I am good.

Crimeny, I didn't wanna start an editorial page about what constitutes a good plinking gun. I just wanna know if the 3" frame top strap is thicker than the 2".

I don't own an lcr, or lcrx (yet), but handling them at a gunshop I did not notice top strap difference, though the profile may be different to allow for the rear adj sight on lcrx. The rib on top of the barrel shroud does seem slightly taller..the front sight is pinned in.

You might consider the LCR 357 mag version. It will cost about $50 more, but has a steel frame, weighs about 4 oz. more than the 38 and can stand up to greater punishment. It's still pretty light at 17 oz.

I think the 3" LCRX is contoured a little more square then the 2" LCRX because the barrel uppers are slightly different in shape. The 3" gun with adjustable sight set up and "rib" on the barrel are molded slightly different. Is there more metal there ,IMHO, no , just more plastic.

You are correct that the aluminum alloy shell with steel frame core . I forgot . Basically it is still contoured to the barrel and is it stronger, I doubt it.
