Got a new LCR (with CT) for CC.

What type ammo, for home/self protection would you recommend?

I hear the +p is hard on the hand, or not what you want to shoot often at the range.

If a .38 built in this century can't handle +P, it should not have been brought to market.

Comfort is another matter however, and you may want to plink and practice with standard velocity rounds. Run a few of your +P defence rounds through it just so you know what to expect out of a 14 oz snubbie.

My ccw choice is the FBI load (.38 +P LSWCHP) But let some others chime in on which defence round is best. There are so many good options available nowadays.

Practice with cheap 38 special ammo but carry the good stuff like Federal Hydro-Shock. Just check to make sure the POI is about the same. :D :D

Regular Hydro-Shock or critical defence is about right.

148-gr. Wadcutters are likely to give you the lowest recoil and raise the fun-factor in shooting the LCR for practice.

For self defense out of a short barrel, suggest you consider hollowpoint ammo with a fast burning powder, like Speer's excellent 135-gr. Short Barrel Gold Dot load. It has a little less recoil than the FBI load of LWSCHP 158-gr., penetrates about the same and has a lot more expansion.

Regular 38 Special ammo wastes a lot of powder out of short-barreled revolvers. Snubnose handguns can be optimized with faster burning powders designed for short barrels.
