The post about the truck driver getting awarded a judgement for a wrongful arrest is interesting, but I didn't want to hijack that thread.
PLEASE DO NOT MAKE THIS THREAD POLITICAL, IT IS NOT!!
The current political & public climate of attitudes towards law enforcement is sad. Just last night, on our local news, there was a story about how NC is currently suffering from the lack of enough Highway Patrol officers. Across the state,, we are short by over 200 officers. So, they are trying a program to recruit officers who have already been certified as LEO,,, and reduce the necessary training time to try & fill these empty positions.
And it's not just our Highway Patrol,, it's most law enforcement agencies across our State & much of the nation.
But what really got me about the whole story,, and the MAIN focus of this post, was the pay scale for the Highway Patrol. I was appalled at the starting pay. $46,000.00 a year. This for a person who has to undergo 26 weeks of training, and deal with death on the highway. A person who has to wear a bullet proof vest daily to HOPEFULLY survive being attacked by criminals. A person who puts their life on the line daily and tries to help the public as much as they can.
And why is this truly appalling?
Starting salary for a school teacher is $54,000.00 a year. AND we get constant demands by the teachers in our states wanting more benefits, more pay, & they cry poor mouth all the time. They claim that NC is "among the lowest paid teachers in the country. They claim they need more benefits. Yet,, they are required to have school open 180 days a year,, (and yes, I know they work more days than that,) but want MORE benefits.
I don't see school teachers wearing a bullet proof vest daily. I don't see school teachers out all hours of the day & night in all kinds of weather doing their job. I don't see school teachers having to deal with the remains of a drunk driver who hits a van full of kids killing several. I don't see school teachers knocking on the door of a home to tell someone how their loved one was killed by a teenager texting while driving.
Yet,, a Highway Patrol officer does this all the time AND gets less pay & less respect. Appalling.
Ok, rant off.
