Large throats ?

I'm looking at a used NM SBH.
With calipers the throats are measuring .433
I don't have pin gauges.
This is going to be an issue with cast bullets isn't it?

Calipers are not good choice for measuring throats. Absent pin gauges, bullets of a known size are a decent substitute.

There are a number of molds that are designed around .434 bullets. Might be difficult to buy commercial cast bullets though since they are typically .430. FWIW, I think I use .432-.433 cast bullets in all my Ruger .44s.

I believe that the only accurate method of measuring is with pin gauges. That being said, I remember that Missouri Bullet will size bullets to a customer's spec... you gotta call them to ask and then you may have to wait awhile. I assume, they still offer this option, but really, pin gauges are the only way to go....IMHO

I used a higher quality caliper today
All chambers measured .431
Also I tried 4 different cast bullets.
Largest is sized .432, it would not go into any throat.
.431 was the tightest push fit.
So looks good, thanks for the input.
Also ran a tight lubed patch through the bore, I felt no constriction at the frame.
I'll check barrel to cylinder gap tomorrow.

You don’t have any thing to worry about. I’ve had 10 .44 M Ruger’s. Super RedHawks and Super Blackhawks. Throats have all been good. .45 Colt Blackhawks are a different story.
