Last Saturday evening, we were invited to my niece's home for a birthday dinner for her older sister. Also my sister was there. My sister is 93 and suffering from Alzheimer's disease. We had a pleasant evening, though my sister is not there mentally.
As my niece opened her birthday cards I saw a note my sister had written in her card. Seeing this really made me sad.
My sister always had the most beautiful handwriting I ever saw, equaling that of my Dad's. Around 1977 or so she was in an auto accident in which she lost all the fingers of her right hand. After recovering, she taught herself to write holding the pen with her thumb against the nub of her hand. She practiced until her handwriting equaled that of her previous script.
There on that birthday card was her note, written in wavering line and shaky letters written by a shaking hand. Sort of got to me.
