I was very taken with a girl from Texas I met at the E Club at Miramar. We shared a couple dances, I bought her a few drinks. Being a FRI night I asked if she wanted to do dinner or a movie SAT night. She said ok. I went to pick her up at her barracks and she didn't come out by the time we agreed on. I walked into the barracks quarterdeck and inquired. The duty watch said she wasn't in.....as I was walking back to my truck I heard a "Hey You!"...I turned and saw her walking across the parking lot wearing coveralls, hair pulled back, and didn't recognize her until she got close. Her face had a smudge mark and she was carrying a tool box. She apologized and begged for some time to clean up......she went into a frustrated/panicked explanation about a stripped oil drain plug and stuck oil filter. Said she was changing the oil on her truck. Her truck?......yeah she pointed out her truck....a beautiful 1978 Chevy C10 4X4 with a brand new Rancho suspension lift.....Well I waited at the quarterdeck for her. She came back fast, clean and so dang cute....I was smitten. But....when walking to my truck I had to admit to her....I had a Chevy S10......also with a brand new Rancho suspension....but I was a big 6'4" Ordie and she was a tiny admin type with a very nice C10 twice the size of my truck. Plus she knew her stuff and did all her own maintenance. She smiled at my truck and didn't say a word. We went to (Rusty Scupper/Pelican?) in La Jolla and then UTC to see Back To The Future. It was a great night. I also had a motorcycle at the time (Suzuki SP600) and she wanted to go for a ride. But for whatever reason...duty sections, my Dets, whatever... it never happened. Lost track as I transferred/deployed shortly after.
If cell phones existed back then things may have turned out differently....
Her name was Emily.......the Texan girl who got away.......she was tiny but like they say about everything in Texas being bigger her personality and looks were BIGGER!

That is too true! It can be more so if like me they have a fun heritage like myself having Mexican and Cajun and been told with the passion and temper those both bring. Double barreled trouble if you rile me up.
