I had an uncle who lost his eye as a rifleman in the fighting around Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge. As a kid I didn't know enough to give that man the respect that he deserved. But I know he was proud of me, which was ironic, when I was in Vietnam in his old unit, the 101st Airborne Division. My experience was nothing like his from D-Day through the surrender of Germany. Like most WW2 vets, he almost never mentioned his military service.
