I got a pre ban Elephant Tusk a while back from one of my suppliers and decided that the first set needs to go to my Colt Officers model.

Ivory on a Colt sure feels Right. :D







 
Ivory,,, one of the few materials I'd love to have plenty of to re-stock many of my handguns. On one hand, I prefer the "as shipped" guns when they are safe queens. But on my shooters,, I'd love to own some really nice ivory. I've had some ivory, but they didn't fit properly, so I let them go to other shooters. One of these days,,,!
The beauty of them, no matter what the gun is simple yet elegant!

Interesting, covering the mainspring housing pin. Is this so that one cannot detail-strip the gun with the grips in place, thereby minimizing the possibility of damage to the grips? Or was it done this way for simple cosmetic reasons?

though it's the first time I've ever worked with it Ivory has always been a favorite of mine and I hope to add more to my personal collection. :D

thank you! it was one of the 1911's my Dad carried when he was a deputy sheriff so it saw a lot of use.

it was done mostly for looks ( it's one of the more popular styles I make and it kinda grew on me ) but anything to help reduce the risk of damage to $300 grips is a plus. :D
 
Looks great Zane. Are you going to be offering ivory in your various styles? How many sets do you figure you can get from your tusk?

i'd have to cut it up first to be sure but I believe i'll be able to get three more sets of 1911 grips from it which i'll probably end up selling, after that I will hopefully be able to get some more ivory that would work for single action sized grips.

Zane .... that's a nice set of Ivories! Your website shows some of your beautiful custom grip work, with both the "main spring housing pin" covered or notched to expose the pin. I personally prefer the grip panels covering the pin, mainly for aesthetics I think.

By the way, you use some really nice grip materials !

Looks almost identical to my Commander in 38 Super.
 
That Commander is not mine. Mine looks identical (even to the worn bluing) but has pewter medallions. They were made by Spresser Knifeworks, off of e-bay. I'll post a picture soon.

The Bisley is unknown. The story is: It was shipped to a gunstore in Mexico City (per Colt), then customized (looks like it was gold plated, as there are remnants in the flutes, trigger, etc). It ended up on the Apache Reservation in northern Arizona (per the seller who is a collector near Flagstaff) The engraving was done somewhere along the way, maybe an Indian craftsman. The eyes are rubies. Maybe it was stolen from a rancho? Taken from a Mexican officer on a raid?
