Coming home after our grandson's high school volleyball game, we stopped for a late bite at the local "Five Guys". We each had a burger, I had a soft drink, my wife just had water. So two burgers and one drink, and the bill was $32. They make a really good burger, but $32.......

I take my wife (who's from England) as a treat maybe once a month. Five Guys has the closest to proper English chips that we've found.

Gads, I went to a restaurant that had "Fish and Chips" on the menu and the "fish" was Tilapia and the "chips" were curly fries! I sent it back and left.

For that money, you could go to a full service restaurant and have a cute waitress bring your food to you.

I don't know what restaurant would give us a sit down meal for two for $32, and at a sit down I would be leaving a 20% tip. I think $50-60 is more like it in my area, even in a modest chain restaurant.
Our ROMEO Club (RetiredOldMenEatingOut) does brunch once a week.
For a long time we ate at the local Shoney's Big Boy and a two-egg breakfast was something like $8.00 or so. Then they closed that restaurant. We moved across the street to Bob Evans where that meal was over $9.00. The portions kept getting smaller and the price went up to $10.00 so we decided to try Waffle House. Breakfast was over $10.00 but the portions are full-size and the service is classic WH. Within the last three weeks the price has gone up to $11.00. With a $2.00 tip we're wondering how much more increase we're gonna accept. We may have to pack a lunch and meet in the park.

Last time I went to 5guys, I left satisfied. I don’t remember what it cost. So it was reasonable.
Google says they use 7 ounces for their regular burger. Basically a pound for both servings. At most thats $8 worth of meat. Bun, condiments, cheese, bacon? Other over head. Another $8.

I don't eat at Chez Fancy like you. There's a local chain, Eat n Park, $11.99 for a double patty burger with two sides and a drink. $24 plus tip, still less than $30.
This burger joint is at a gas station just down the road from Son and has a GIANT Burger 10oz.just like the sign says. They are really good. The first time I ordered a double never again

Yes, 5-Guys costs more than in the olden days, but I believe it to be a decent hamburger. I can go to lesser/cheaper places, but I get what I pay for.

The fountain drink was $3.49 and tax was about the same. But I am confident that they made a profit on my visit.Don’t forget labor, lights, building maintenance and taxes, insurance, and more.
We have a depression-era hotdog stand nearby. Still operating, they have arguably the best coney-dogs anywhere. A dinner for two there, now 25-bucks. It's not stopping.

Sometimes I make my burgers, sometimes I buy the frozen ones even though they are not cheap. Yesterday I bought some at Kroger, I think there are 20 burgers for $32. I wanted to get my regular Bubbas but my wife insisted even though these are 1/4 pound instead of 1/3.
Daughter's family is coming over so they will go through a lot of them.

Well, I sold 920lb Cull Cow month bak. She dollared up $2575. Hamburger's are gonna be expensive! Local sale last wk had some 5mo Bred heifer's. They were nice but not Fancy, $4200 ea. I hav 44 Fancy Balancer Hfrs that are 1/3 calved out. Rest will Calve next 40 days. It is really tempting!!! 
I remember when they opened up the first McDonald’s in town. There was another off-brand Burger joint in the same area that made pretty good .25c hamburgers they got into competition where McDonald’s was charging five for a dollar. We used to gather together in our cars and hang out at the burger joints which are almost side-by-side. Lately there’s no place that I would consider to be a cheap hamburger anymore. We have an old drugstore downtown that makes an old-fashioned hamburger and sometimes will stop there but they’re only open for breakfast and lunch. I don’t eat at any of the fast food places anymore with maybe the exception of Wendy’s for their apple pecan salad.

But they now have value options and I was happily surprised to get a McDouble, 4 chicken toes, fries, and a small drink for $5.50! I was shocked and happily I might say. I KNOW they don't stack up to others in some ways, but their current value meals are okay.

Vito, not doubting your word, but something doesn't add up. Did you save the receipt for review later? I looked at the menu prices for Chicago area 5 guys & it doesn't add up.
Sounds like a mistake on the check, or the cashier simply socked it to ya.
I had to keep a keen eye on one Mex joint here in town. Not sure if their math skills were lacking, or maybe one or 2 of them might have been a bit shady..

We are more for making our own, too expensive with the chains, now some of the run down looking shack looking greasy(emphasis) spoon places here make great burgers that don't cost an arm and leg, which is often the case.
5 Guys is steep, but it is good. Cheap burger in a hurry? Wendy’s Biggie bag $5.
We go out for breakfast fairly regularly. A standard two eggs, meat, potatoes and toast is $10 nearly everywhere. (we are in the land of coneys...) I usually get the “ kiddie breakfast “ which is roughly 1/2 of the above. It’s still $7.

I hear ya Wendy, I have one fave from a Frisch's big Boy chain & I now make it at home. I also make a pretty good smash burger that seems to be so popular these days.
These are above & beyond the types of burgers I've made at home for years. That's not to say that I don't go thru a drive thru from time to time. When you're out on the road ya ain't got much choice.

I know it's not the best burger but by using the app and coupons you can get a Burger King Whopper pretty cheap. Many times it's a BOGO.
