I bought this rifle today and am curious if the stock is original? I'm told it is but just like to make sure
Is this M77 laminate stock original?

I would say yes it is a factory stock. Original to the gun? Probably but one never knows. They did make them in that configuration. Very nice RS btw...

Thanks its a .270 I asked the seller if it came with rings also but they said no as it was originally shipped with sights from Ruger it wouldn't have came with rings?rugerjunkie said:

That is definitely a factory DZ desert camo stock in what appears to be a M77RS-DZ configuration. It should have been shipped with the rings, for the "S" versions shipped with sights but no rings were from the 1970's. A letter from Ruger would confirm if the rifle was shipped in a "DZ" configuration with that stock. A very nice looking rifle indeed!

I believe it's a Ultralite stock Black tip which came with sights and without sights and 20" barrel.that barrel looks like a 22"

Thanks guys, the seller is just a dealer so no surprise they really didn't know for sure about the rings. As soon as I get it in my hands I'm going to send for a letter from Ruger. I couldn't pass it up because I have never seen a older m77 with laminate stock at least around these parts
With that stock and correct 20" barrel that would be a model M77RLS-DZ..(rings, lightweight, sights). A great configuration. Congrats on a seldom seen rifle...people tend to hold on to those...

Nice gun. I have seen them with that stock, so do believe it to be original. I sure do like the iron sights!

I have a M77 in 270 with MT green laminate stock. It has ruger rings and open sights on it but I am not sure the rings came with the gun I do not have the box.
That is a factory DZ stock. It was put on the RL and RLS Ultralights. Now your rifle has the sights so that would make it a RLS but the barrel looks to long in the photo. The RLS rifles had 18.5" barrels while the RL rifles had 20" barrels. Measure your barrel length and get back to us. Beautiful rifle by the way.

Ill probably have my ffl measure it before I even get my hands on it because the suspense is killing me. I found another thread from 2013 on another RLS where Chet15 says the RLS's were probably distributor specials. With that I wonder if there could have been some made with barrels longer then a 18.5" or 20"? Also would a factory letter recognize it as a distributor special?

Your rifle is definitely a standard sporter weight 22" barrel. The RENE Ruger Reference lists a M77RS-DZ in .30-06 with a "U" suffix and a distributor special M77RS-DZ in .338WM. So, there appears to be some out there. This rifles stock does appear to look like a RLS stock with black forend tip.

Anything that looks like that in the old tang safety M77 is a rare gun!!

I am puzzled by the black forearm tip; makes me think it is an RLS with the DZ stock. I can only add that my NIB M77RSDZ in .338 WM has sights and included rings. Was informed by the most knowledgeable M77 collector I know of that the DZ was for Desert Zebra. That the 1st green laminate stocks were just a Z. I cannot find any mention in the '89, or thereabouts, Factory catalogs.

My first thought was a Boyds aftermarket stock. My reason for that was the black fore end tip and the wear on the trigger guard. For me, it is hard to imagine the trigger guard having that much wear, and the stock not having any visible dings. Curious to see if it has a Ruger pad on it.
I am not as smart about the ins and outs of Ruger as some of you, but that was my first impression. I am curious to find out how this turns out.

I did ask them about them the finish on the stock and metal and was told its perfect. I believe the flash in the pics made the trigger guard look like it has wear spots on the edges. For what its worth im told it has the factory Ruger butt pad on it. Curiosity is killing me :D

It is definitely not an RLS or RSI barrel. The barrel shank is too long, and the caliber designation is stamped on the barrel shank. The shank on the RL & RSI is much shorter and the caliber designation is stamped several inches forward on the barrel not the shank. No idea on the stock, maybe shipped as a barreled action?
