I'm a new shooter and I've been thinking about liability insurance. Is it something I should consider and if so what company should I go with?

Be prepared for your insurance company to demand make, model and serial number ~ maybe even pictures ~ of items you want them to cover.

There’s other threads here on this topic …. Be dozens of possibilities for you to consider.

You may want to talk to these guy's, for me it was definitely better that homeowners insurance and cheaper.

if your looking for liability insurance for using your friend, look into get a Gun Lawyer on Retainer, because most of so called carry companies have more rules than homeowners insurance.

I too read it to think the OP is asking about liability insurance in case of being involved in something where he may be part of a shooting incident.

I think the majority of folks here don't carry such insurance.
Why?
Because of a few facts.
Very few people are actually involved in such things who are true studies of the use of lethal force.
Most of us have chosen to take classes on our State laws concerning self defense & the law,, such as what's offered through taking a CCW class.
Many of us KNOW to NEVER EVER say a single word to ANY LEO that is so involved. We say one single word. "Lawyer."
In fact,, most of us know that LEO's are NOT required (by law,) to be totally truthful during any questioning.
And most of us know that "trying to cooperate" with them,, (LEO's) WITHOUT a lawyer is NOT the way to handle things.

Lastly most of us who do carry a firearm as a preventive measure for the rare chance of actually having to use it in SD understand the seriousness of it and we exercise RESTRAINT until absolutely necessary.

So, to answer the question,, yes,, some of the people here do buy insurance,, but most don't.

Not that it has to do with the OP's question but Last fall my General Liability and Personal insurance for my company, it is just me, went up over 100%... more than doubled. The message was that the company insuring me did no longer want my business.... and I figured out why finally. After 40 years of no claims their statistical analysis says I'm way past due.

as for the original question, I fall back on Contender's thoughts.... and hope and pray he is right.
It kind of goes with the question sometimes asked. "Do you really think you are going to need to use that gun?"
My answer is, "If I thought I was going somewhere that I might have to use it, I'm just not going there."

"My answer is, "If I thought I was going somewhere that I might have to use it, I'm just not going there."

This is an extension of my explanation. Basically,, try & avoid places where "stuff" might happen.

A good example is something that happened recently in Trasheville,, eerr,, Asheville NC.
Trasheville is KNOWN among many to have a very liberal political government. As such,, they have promoted many things that attract a less than desirable type of people. They have a serious & big problem with homeless, vagrants, panhandling etc.
Especially in the downtown area,, that also has a lot of micro-breweries, restaurants etc.
A family of (4) from SC were there,, and approached by a homeless guy wanting money. The father refused & moved on with his family. He was getting them into his car,, and "felt a sting" in his back. The known criminal, homeless guy had picked up a dirty, used needle off the street & stabbed the guy in the back. (Trasheville has free needles just for the asking.)
The thug is well known to police. He was arrested,, again,, and it's not sure what will happen next. But many expect his bond will be lowered,, and he'll be back out on the street before long. And his taxpayer appointed lawyer will argue mental issues & such to where he'll not do any real time.

But the point to this,, is BECAUSE of the environment,, many of us "locals" to the area refuse to ever go downtown Trasheville. And even one local paper describing the story above,, quoted a LEO as saying; "This could have gone very badly if the homeless guy had attacked a CCW person who was carrying."

Insurance is a good thing if you are trying to be prepared for the very real potential of a problem. Auto wrecks,, home fires, medical issues,,, etc. Many of these things are much harder to avoid.
But you can greatly reduce your exposure to potential danger by doing a lot of situational awareness, as well as area avoidance.

Your homeowners insurance liability provisions covers negligence, not intentional acts. So if you shoot someone in self defense, it is not negligent but intentional. No H.O. coverage for you. I have liability insurance for this type of event through this company. It has a large coverage limit and pays for defense attorneys. Cost is reasonable.

I have this: It's a one year policy, actually just renewed this month.
[email protected].

Personal Firearms Liability
Policy Aggregate Limit: $500,000
Effective date: 8/23/2023
Carrier: Lyndon Southern Insurance Company
Premium: $125.00

Many umbrella policies specifically prohibit any and all firearms related activities.

The term umbrella does not cover everything you can get under it …… always gotta read your policy, especially the exclusions.

I have umbrella insurance and it's not prohibited about legal use of firearms. The catch is umbrella insurance at least my current and past in Oregon excludes criminal acts committed by home owner. It's for civil lawsuits against the homeowner. The criminal part, I am not worried about being charged especially living in Id. But living in Portland, Seattle, New York etc etc. would be different.
For those who don't know, that would be the guy you shot if they live, but likley his family, will be serving you with a civil tort claim. Even when the police investigation, DA and GJ says it was justified. They will as long as you or your estate is worth money.

sorry, wrong subject post
