Insulted at work today

Apparently, everyone else at my pay level is an apple iphone user. I have an Android phone so am the outcast(among other reasons). Anyhoo, we get important work info by group texts. This morning, an urgent message was sent and by 2PM my phone was still alive with emojis, got it, and OK replies OVER & OVER & OVER. I finally had enough and texted (NOT reply all) the original sender to PLEASE STOP this. Response: if it bothers you, just 'exit the chat' (like I know what he's talking about). Later the same guy sends a text that "those of us who aren't APPLE users can just turn off our notifications or silence our ringer". HUH WHAT?? I have people working in the field, kids working away from home, and other family who might need to contact me. I felt insulted that an administrative supervisor would make such suggestions. I've calmed down a bit but this is not going away. I'm required to carry a smart phone and paid for the service, but no requirement that my phone operate on a specific system.

I'd be very tempted to get a FTF with that supervisor,, and have a blunt "heart to heart" discussion about insulting their elders. Especially elders who have more field knowledge than most of the yuppies who think their iphone is the only way to go.

Up until just before I retired we only had two requirements. You computers, desktop, laptop or tablet had to be able to run Office. And your cell had to be an operating system and software release capable of connecting to control equipment.

Anytime someone had a glitch the users of other systems would be unmerciful in razzing the victim of computer idiocy. But fear not was comes around goes around eventually.

Yes, maybe I am taking the slight too personally. Keep in mind I'm the minority in the group--oldest field supervisor in the state, only male field supervisor in the state, and challenged repeatedly on my capabilities even though I'd been in a management position with my previous agency for 25 years .
As far as I'm concerned, a phart phone is only a tool and not something constantly in hand and/or in front of face. I could make derogatory comments about the others walking around with phone in hand constantly, BUT I DON'T. Therefore, comments about my phone op system should not be allowed.

They had to hire me an Administrative Assistant for all the Computer Stuff when I got the Chief QC position for a few Power Plants. Being able to pull welding procedures out of my posterior and qualify them was worth it to them.

I understand your concern but seriously, an Android phone? Might as well have a flip phone with an extendable antennae. Everyone knows that only an Iphone is acceptable. With other than an Iphone you can't Facetime or Airdrop photos and who knows what other essential functions you are missing out on.

But seriously, I think that the Iphone is so popular that some folks just assume that everyone else is using one rather than one of the many competitors. I wouldn't take it so personally if I were you.

Exactly what my thought was. Some are not nearly as arrogant when in a discussion face to face.

Retired now, but when I worked, the IT guy told me that all the IT guys carried their personal Android phones because “they work better”. They all made fun of the ignorant “Suits” that had the I-phones.

How much time do you have left until you retire. I really just don't think it is worth the effort to be mad at this person. To be honest if they made me real mad I'd just tell them what I thought & not come back. I've always been bad when it comes to leaving a job though. When I'm done I'm done.

If a apple user starts a group "chat" and includes a android user in it the android guy is kind of screwed to get out of it.
Only practical way is the apple users start a new chat session and leave you out. There may be ways for you to opt out
but they're unknown to me. Kind of sucky design on Apple's part, or maybe it was just a "screw you" to android.
The Apple users don't have the option ( I think ) to reply to just one person on the thread without starting a new message
just to an individuals phone.
No help but maybe explains what was happening, on the other hand you're retiring so %^&$ all of em!

I have a very OLD flip-phone..... It's almost always OFF.....

When I was a young fella and working for a major multinational company, I asked an old guy (who was retiring) "how does one know when to retire?". He told me "you'll know when"!
I retired when I realized that most of the other 300,000 employees were WAY ahead of me in all things that were important. I left with no hard feelings and on good terms with everyone (I hope). While not without difficulties, it was a great 43yrs 9months.

Hold on a second there. What is wrong with a flip-phone. It is a phone, it allows me to talk to people. I don't want to walking around with a computer in my pocket. I guess I'm just a luddite.

P.S. I still use maps too and shoot single-shots.

Flip phones haven't had antennas for a long time. Heck mine is even semi-smart. Had to give up my dumb one when they made me go to one that supported 4G. Works pretty good. I turned off the wireless, data & any other computer function.

Not real fond of group texts myself.

I'm retired. It was time. And, it's good to have something to fill in the time. I have friends who had no hobbies or even outside interests and I find it harder and harder to talk to them. There seems to be little of mutual interest.

Last time I saw Steve Wozniak he was using an Android phone. he discussed with my son a quirk in the model he was carrying. Steve continually assesses the competition.

• Open the group chat.
• Hit the 3 dots in the upper right corner
• Select "Group details"
• Select "Notifications"
• Select "Silent"

You'll still get the messages but no constant notifications when people get chatty.

I have no idea what type my phone is. Took me long enough to get it. T-Mobile gobbled up Sprint and tells me my phone will no longer work after a certain date. They send me a new one gratis (???) and it got dropped with damage. They sent a new one and when I went to get it activated, they couldn't get it going. Phone was still attached to another account. WTF??This was back in January 2023. After a 6 month battle I finally got a working replacement yesterday and got it activated with a lot of help with the guys and gals at the T-Mobile store. They went way out of their way helping me. Whether it's an Android or I-phone I have no clue. I do know that at times it chirps like I'm getting a text message but when I open it up? There's nothing there.
There was a time not all that long ago when you couldn't get me to have a cell phone. I never thought I really had much use for one. The kids convinced me to try it but still felt why do I need one? Still I kept it with me until one day I became a part of that, "I've fallen and can't get up. (joke?) That phone in my pocket and the numbers 911 got me back up and about in less than 10 minutes. I'm lucky there are two fire stations within a mile of the house and they get here quick. That incident made me look at cell phones a lot different. I even do some limited texting with the kids and a few friends but find that to be a PITA. What ever happened to people calling on the phone and talking with each other?????
