Wishing all a safe and fun holiday, while remembering the Founders/ Framers of our great country. Here's a quote I like:

"The United States was the first country in the history of the world to be consciously created out of an idea - and the idea was liberty. ---Nathaniel Branden

"After leaving Washington, Thomas Jefferson spent the last two decades of his life at Monticello. He died on July 4, 1826--hours before his good friend and former political rival John Adams--on the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence"

Saw this early this morning on the John1911 weblog:

July 4th, 1776
Just remember. Independence wasn’t won because of some signatures on a piece of paper. You are free because America was victorious in righteous battle.

And we are a Constitutional Republic because General George Washington refused to be made king. He accepted two terms as President and then retired and went home.

It still is to this day one of history’s greatest and most inspiring decisions. That singular choice is what separates us from every tin-horn, 2-bit banana-factory, and socialists nightmare.

George Washington. General of the Armies (GAS). President of The United States. Father of Our Country. Citizen.

A study in contrasts:
July 4, 1974. I was away in a place where Independence Day was not a celebration. The guard doubled, to make sure. No incidents to report.
July 4, 1975. Back home. My unit marched in the Independence Day Parade. Got booed. Had to control my anger.
July 4, 1979. My last Independence Day parade. I was in the National Guard then. Got cheered. Felt proud.
July 4, 1982. Shortly after I had completed my service. Took my 2-yr old son to the parade. The kid was happy. My wife and I were happy. All's well.

The only thing I worry about is some jackass setting my woods on fire. Every 4th for the last 16 years it has rained on my house and forest, including today although we didn't get much yet today, but got a decent t-storm yesterday. May get a little more tonite tho. :)

My wife and I used to go skeet shooting on July 4th. This year we are actually back in Bulgaria. We were at the Black Sea, and they had some fireworks last weekend, but today was pretty relaxing, very cool temps and a great day.

We drove back to Plovdiv, through the Thracian Plains, I read in a guide book today, when Orpheus died, rumor has it, his body was thrown from the hills of Plovdiv, into the wild waters of the Martiza River.

Plovdiv being my wife's home town and the oldest city in Europe.

So happy 4th! To y'all back home in the states.

Let us hope God continues to Bless America...
So far I've spent my day inventorying ammo.... and such.. Walked the dawgs and now need to cook some meat for friends coming over tonight.
Oh, and these friends were born and raised in Germany and have lived here in the U.S. for the last 17 or more years, two years ago they invited my wife and I to their swearing in ceremony to become American Citizens.... one of the greatest and most humbling experiences of my life. Most folks (probably including me) could not pass the test and I suspect many would not be willing to take the oath (look it up) .... also, if I remember correctly this cost them something like five grand. They wanted to be Americans... it humbles me, someone who is an American via the easy way.

"A Republic, if you can keep it." Benjamin Franklin at the Constitutional Convention, 1787.
"Europe was created by History, America by Philosophy." Margaret Thatcher
"Damn the Rebels that they would not flinch!" A British officer after Bunker Hill.

Indeed we have a great country. My father, an German by ancestry, fought in a war to preserve Freedom! He made our enemies bleed and die. Today, I went to the range on my farm, and touched off 20 rounds of .44mag. It was all I could take of the HEAT! Thanks Dad!
