I just got a set of feeler gages after a 5 month wait and was able to measure the endshake on the SP101 that I carry. Cylinder gap measures between .005 and .006 depending on the individual chamber and end shake is around .0025 to .003 or so. From my understanding, my gap is just about perfect and my endshake is good as well.

Excellent.

However,, why did it take so long to get a set of feeler gauges?
Well, that's a really good question. I ordered a set of a well known American made (we'll come back to this in a minute) feeler gages from a distributor back in January. Normally, I order from MSC or Grainger as they have good prices and excellent service but both were sold out, as were Brownell's and Midway, so I went with this distributor. After a week of the gages not showing up, I tried contacting the distributor via email with no response. I then tried calling. All I got was a rude receptionist who was completely unhelpful and said to email. I tried emailing again a bit later and, you guessed it, still no response. I eventually gave up but hadn't gotten around to finding another set of inch measurement gages. Out of the blue, I get a shipping notice that the gages had shipped this last Monday with the package arriving Thursday.

I opened the package and there were the gages. The box had the right model number, the right bar code number, right brand, etc., except it said "Made in China". FWIW, the websites for both the distributor and manufacturer still say that the gages are made in the US. I paid a $30 premium and had a 5 month wait and ended up with Chinese gages anyway. At least they work and they're intact. My preferred brand, Mitutoyo, unfortunately doesn't sell inch measurement feeler gages, only mm, and I like to buy US if there's a comparable product available. As it turns out, there isn't, and I could have gotten a comparable set of gages in January for a fraction of the price.

you got me curious now, I've got a set of gauges that were my Dad's, they must be 70 years old, have to check and see where they were made. Haven't used them since 1970 when I had a '60 Pontiac.....

I got my set of gauges from the auto parts store 5 minutes away from home. You've got a good b/c gap at .005-006. Ruger accepts as much as .008 from my limited knowledge. Did you measure with the cylinder pushed to the rear?

Yes. To calculate the cylinder gap, the cylinder was wedged to the rear. I then wedged the cylinder forward and remeasured the gap. I then took the cylinder gap proper and subtracted the forward shoved cylinder gap. That got me my end shake.

Ok,, I now understand the time it took to get the gauges. Wow!

I too prefer to buy US made stuff as much as I can.

But the main thing now is you have gauges & the gun is in good tolerances.

Which distributor? Name and shame

Manson Tool & Supply out of NY, not to be confused with Manson Reamers. I've purchased from Manson Reamers as well and I can say that they're great with quality products and timely shipping. Now, to be fair, there's a decent chance that Manson Tool was waiting on Starrett for delivery, but in that case they should have marked the item as backordered at the time of purchase and they should have responded to my attempts at contacting them. A simple, "We're sorry but we're waiting on Starrett", would have solved my issues with them. A simple note on the Starrett site that said, "Made in USA or China" would have been fair as I would have made a better decision. Unfortunately, neither of those things happened.

The really strange part was the billing. I placed the order on 25 Jan. The thing wasn't billed until the middle of February. I didn't ship until the beginning of this week. Now, UPS did ship it in a timely and professional manner. UPS - A+. Starrett - F. Manson Tool - FFF---.

It's really sad as Starrett was THE name for precision professional grade measuring equipment, with only Mitutoyo being in the same league. In fact, I have an old Starrett dial indicator that I think is great. Now, the only top game left is Mitutoyo.

Could’ve gone to Harbor freight.
I’ve got three sets of gauges that I’ve had for as long as I can remember. Two of them came from my dad and the other one I picked up when I was in the
service. And I have another set that's pretty long. I think maybe 4 1/2 or 5 inches I used for valve adjudtment.

Yup. My problem is that I attempted to buy American. I've learned my lesson andStarrett won't be getting any of my business anymore.

Good for you for trying to buy American. It’s sad that it backfired on you.

Glad your gun is fine.

I recently checked all of mine and my sons the Rugers were excellent, 3 S&W’s were not ok and went back to the factory. 2 of them were brand new.

I was just talking to a buddy about revolvers about 5 minutes ago. The subject of S&W came up. Their problem is that their QC is just in the dirt right now. Ruger is about the only revolver that I would risk buying these days. How's S&W's customer service?

Really good. My 686 MG had poor lock up on 3 chambers, terrible cylinder gap, and a dented grip. My sons .22 was shaving lead. These were both brand new guns.

They replaced both barrels and took care of timing issues.

10 day turn around. No charge.

My old 317 was worn out. I asked for it to be re finished black. They sent an invoice for $233 which I authorized. I’m still waiting for it to come back.
