But it happened this evening.

After a long day at the range with our monthly USPSA match, I was hungry. So was Miss Penny. We decided to go into town & enjoy a good German dinner. When we arrived,,, there was only one other couple in there, as we were a tad early for the dinner crowd & well after the lunch bunch had long gone.
As we leisurely enjoyed our dinner, the place began to fill up. An older guy can in wearing a ball cap depicting his Army service. It was familiar, and he sat one booth ahead of us. Soon after, another couple was seated behind us. Well the Army vet & his wife finished & were about to leave, & I inquired as to the unit, and it happened to be an Armor unit from Ft. Hood where I was Air Cav. He had gotten there after I'd left,,, and we shared pleasantries of our service. We wished each other a Merry Christmas & thanked each other for our service.
he left.

Now the couple behind us seemed pleasant, even if the guy seemed a bit loud. Not rowdy or anything,, just his voice carried well. A normal couple out for dinner. The guy looked a bit rough, but not weird or anything.

Well after a pleasant relaxing dinner topped off with apple strudel, I finally reached for my check that had been left when the waitress had delivered the strudel. As I was checking the bill, I noticed a small mistake, and as I POLITELY asked my waitress about it, she said I was correct,,, but my bill was already taken care of.

I didn't understand.

I inquired as to why or by whom. She motioned behind me to the couple behind us.

I was speechless. As long as I've been a vet, or for all the times I've done so many little things, I've never had a stranger do this for me or us. Miss Penny & I quietly discussed what to do. I felt that if it had been done so in a totally secret way,,, the waitress would not have let me know who had been so kind.
So, as we got up to leave, I turned around behind us & thanked them. It seems the lady wanted to do this, and thanked me for my service. I truly didn't know what to say except a hearty thank you & allowed as how it had never been done to me before. I gave them a brief thought of how a lot of my family had served, and we'd only lost one family member since WWII. I wished them a truly Merry Christmas, and left before I choked up to the point of not being able to speak.

I told Miss Penny I was unaccustomed to being the recipient of stuff from total strangers because of my service. I'm usually doing stuff for other vets etc.
Now, around here,,, this place is like family & I've received gifts & Karma's from the fine folks here. But to have a total stranger do this & thank me,,, made me speechless & humbled.

My Christmas has already been wonderful!

Just about the time you're ready to write off the world as a total loss, something like this happens, and it recharges your batteries. And it's not like the guy paid off your house, or something. Just a small thing like that can mean so much. Thanks for your service and Merry Christmas to you and yours.

contender: That was great. I am so glad that happened to You and your Wife. You just never know, do you. I hope You and Yours have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Thanks Ty! It is always great to hear a story like what happened with you and Miss Penny and this thanks you did receive. It shows generosity on the giver and grace from the receiver.

Contender I know from my contact with you here that you make a point to try to help others. I think it is wonderful someone decided to bless you.

What really made me chuckle as we left the restaurant,,, was the fact that I'm a hard person to be left speechless.
For those of y'all who know me,,, myself, as all of my family, (Mom, Dad, brother & sister,) are all (or were) "blessed" with the "gift of gab!" None of us were often put into a situation where we didn't have a comment or come-back to just about anything. Plus,,, we are/were all orators to those who would listen. Standing at a podium, or just one on one,,,, no problems. So to have someone put me speechless,,, was an unusual thing. I had to chuckle.

But I know the reason.

I was truly humbled & thankful for this kind lady who did this. I thought of many things I could have shared with her about my family & our military service, but in the moment,,, I wasn't able to say much. To say I was thankful is an understatement.
Not for the monetary savings,,,, but the profound statement of thanks for me just doing what I thought was right,,, serving my country. I'm not a hero. I didn't serve in combat. I just served.
My dad, as well as 3 of his brothers were in WWII.
We lost one of them on D-Day in Normandy.
My brother (who is 9 years older than I) did two tours of Vietnam.
I went in just months after the official end of Nam.
I served with a lot of Vietnam vets.
I have Boy Scouts who have served, who have done tours in the middle east & in combat.

All around me, and I never felt like I did anything special,,, just my duty to my country.

A lot of us here are vets, and many did combat tours. All of us understand the feelings of serving. To those who have served,,, we are all brothers,,,,, no matter the branch.

So, as we enter the Christmas season, I want to extend my sincere "THANK YOU" to all who served, and ask for prayers for all the people who do appreciate us.

Glad it happens to such a great guy, I'll second the fact you try and do so much to help others here. It's what makes this forum so great.

Merry Christmas Ty.

Yep, looks good on you. Could not have happened to a nicer or more deserving guy. Thank's for sharing. Merry Christmas. :D

Smetimes our faith in man gets restored in surprising ways and when it does a simply and honest "thank you" is the best we can do. Thanks Ty, not only for being willing to reach out to the first couple but for being a gracious receiver. That is often harder than giving but it means so much to the giver.

I think I know you well enough Ty to say that both you and Miss Penny are good folks down to the core and I know y'all do many ,many things you don't have to ,but rather out of the goodness of your hearts you do.
I thank you for your service to our country and to both of you for being the good folks you are.
MERRY CHRISTMAS my friends you give way more than you receive.
Your Friend,
Lou

Good for you. As stated couldn't happen to a nicer Guy.
Now my story. Yea you knew I would have one :D :D

In 2006 Son was sent to Afghanistan as an IA/Individual Augmentee after 6 weeks of Army Grunt school. Makes a lot of sense sending a pilot to be a Marine Grunt at Camp Blackhorse. His was the first unit to do this. He was the OIC of the unit
Anyway I was at our real small town post office talking to the retired Marine that worked there about Son and what he was doing. I noticed a guy listening to us. As I was getting in my car he stopped me and gave me $50.00 worth of phone gift cards to send to Son for him and the troops to use. I was also speechless.

Ty, glad you & Miss Penny had a Special night out and were treated to a special reward for all the kind things you do for others here on the Forum and in your daily lives.

The time line appears to bear me out on this but that Armor unit you referred to could have been the 2nd Armored Division. Also known as Hell on wheels. I was assigned to that division right after I returned from Nam. Not long after I rotated out the division was disbanded.

Hope that helps.

That goes to show us there's still good folks out there. It's better to give than recieve and some times it's hard to recieve when your the one always giving. It was your time Ty and now you can returned it to someone else and make there day like you always do!

RVN11B40,,, it was the 2nd. I just didn't get a good look at first,,, but when I stopped him,,, he showed me the hat & I saw it was the 2nd.

Y'all, I do appreciate ALL the kind words. It's just that I was taken by total surprise & so humbled at the same time,,, that it just floored me.
Today,,, a friend I've known for over 30 years stopped by. I asked him; "Bob, have you ever seen me at a loss for words?" He replied "Nope!" I then related the story to him & he just chuckled & said; "I'd like to have seen that!"
