how sad we neglect the best gun in the world.
so what would it be?
me.....the cheapest most beat up gun that worked. one someone wouldnt steal. something a kid could understand. a stevens crackshot with 50,000 rounds of bird and buckshot in seabags.
run out of ammo? use it as a baseball bat. 8)
 
I have 5 or 6 good shotguns. Probably would keep dad`s old model 31 Remington 12 gauge. It`s the "cheapest" one but will still do it all and dad shot a ton of game with it. Nostalgia wins.
Here is a picture of dad in his prime. I was going to post a picture of the gun but see I didnt put one in my album. Once dad lost the gun on lake Poygan Wisconsin when he and mom lost a VW in 14 feet of water breaking through the ice in 1960. The gun was under water about a week!

I dunno, bobski: that might be a cruel choice. Kinda like choosing one of your kids over all the others (and I don't even have kids!)

Weighing the various things I do with my shotguns, I think I'd have to choose overall practicality vs everything else. So I'd probably start with the 12 ga Rem 870 which is currently set up as a trap gun. It has a custom stock and forearm, but in the piles of stuff there's also Remington factory wood in both SA and TC grades, together with a couple of synthetic stock/forearm combos, and I'd have to think a bit on what to keep there. I know the 30" full choke barrel would be swapped out with the 28" choke tubed barrel used for bird hunting with that gun.

Other than that, I really don't want to think about such a choice! Giving up my Brownings, both trap and skeet, and several 20 gauges, including my original 870 and a couple of others would be hard. ;)

The only shotguns I own are either Wingmaster or Express 870's. Would need to narrow it down to 410, 20, or 12 gauge, then 18", 20", 28" or 30" barrel, then which choke. I guess if I had to choose just 1 it would be the oldest 12 gauge Wingmaster with 28" modified choke. This one has seen lots of miles and lots of lead down the tube, plus the action can't get much smoother. :)

Unlike the same question about handguns, I didn't have to think about this:

Remington 870, 12 ga.
 
The only one I own is an old Mossberg 500 I bought at K-Mart back in the 90's. It has a 28" barrel & interchangeable chokes.

Since there seems to be a lot of 870 love here I will mention that summitgunbroker is supposed to have a shipment of police trade in 870 wingmasters coming in that will sell for $179 a piece. There is a discount if you order 10 or more.

I've only got two. A J. C. Higgens, 16 ga. bolt action, and a 12 ga. Mossberg 500. The Mossberg would be my choice, since it has both 28" and 18 1/2" barrels and is much easier to find shells for.
 
For versatility, I'd have to keep the 12ga Mossberg 500. Camo'd,6-shot,changable chokes. Has a 26" barrel, and a sling. My heart would want to keep one of the Ithacagun M37's, either the 16ga left to me by an uncle, or the little 20ga one. Funny, the O/U Berreta wouldn't make the cut.
 
I have several shotguns but my favorite is the Browing BPS special field. It's 12ga, 22 inch barrel with a straight stock.
 
I would keep this one, a model 20 JC Higgins pump 12 gauge but it would so me no good now. I bought it new when I was about 12 years old and besides pheasants, rabbits etc shot several deer with it with slugs. Back in 2003 my house was burglarized. I lost many guns but this one showed up. The barrel was sawed, stock sawed off and a Doc Holiday sling put on.
I went to pick it up and the detective wasn't going to give it to me as the barrel was too short. I picked it off the counter, unscrewed the barrel and said you can have the barrel, I will take the action.
I remember dad bought me a single barrel Iver Johnson I think, for my twelfth birthday. I later traded it on this shotgun at a sears store!





 
I have a couple other interesting shotguns. I bought both of them many years ago on a unusual half price sale. The first is a Ithaca model 37 Supreme Skeet in 20 gauge. I have never fired it. The second is a Browning BSS in 12 gauge. I only went out with it once. I shoot my old scratched up stuff.



 
Pretty easy. Browing BPS 12 gauge. Picked it up at a pawn shop for $180, purchased a full range of chokes and an Ithaca-made rifled slug barrel off Gunbroker.
 
Easy choice because I did exactly that.

I kept the Benelli M2, 20 ga, with the 24" vent rib barrel.
 
Can't remember the last time I even fired one of my shotguns. But I have a Franchi featherweight 20ga auto that my dad bought new in the 60s. Still looks new. Also have a Model 12 Winchester 16ga that belonged to my grandfather and was his favorite shotgun. One of those two, but only for sentimental reasons. Truth be told, if I could never own another shotgun I be just fine with it.
 
Having to get rid of the other sixteen shotguns would qualify as 'cruel and unusual punishment', but I would have to keep Dad's Ithaca 37R with the polychoke. It will do anything I need to do with it and I shoot it fairly well - but then, I should, I have been shooting it for 53 years!
