A Gl 19 is hard to argue, depending in where ya live. More rural folks might find a med. frame DA 38/357 to be very versatile. Light plinking/small game loads to full bore magnums.

And then there's the 3-5" 22LR.

As said by previous posters it really depends on the situation that would cause me to only have one firearm. It's a pretty close run between my SR 1911 and one of the GP 100 44special.

One of my three stainless 5" 1911's chambered in 45 ACP....probably end up going with the S&W 'E' Series since I tend to shoot it just a little better than my SA Mil-Spec or the Ruger SR1911.

.41 Remington Magnum S&W M57 or a Ruger Bisley. Had a Bisley that was part of a limited dealers run. Can not recall the exact load but if was very manageable at about 1000 FPS for a 200 grain bullet. Would still have the Bisley, but due to aging eyes and medical maladies it and the rest of the collection went to an auction house.

Always wanted a S&W 57, but just never could find one. Local dealers always said the N57 was a limited run revolver.

Although the GP100 4" that my dad got me for my 18th birthday is a favorite mine would probably be the S&W 686 + 3" would probably get the nod. I am a fan of 3" barrels in that frame size. I am another that would pick a revolver most likely and like the dual caliber feature of the .357.

I like it a lot and it covers a lot of bases but only one would make it a little boring. No telling how good we would get if we only had one...

My Gen 2 G17. It's not the 'nicest' handgun I own, not the 'coolest' and definitely not the prettiest, but I've shot it more than any other and it's never failed me no matter what I feed it, or whether or not I've cleaned it. I think 19 rounds of 9mm on the gun with a +2 extension would put me in a position to handle the most likely scenarios where a handgun would be appropriate. I've got a bunch of mags and spare parts. I know some here would say I would not be equipped to handle a charging grizzly, But the OP didn't say I couldn't have a shotgun or a .44 mag carbine...

Of all of the handguns I have, my Glock 43X gets the most carry. With the Shield Arms magazine and magazine release it's been 100% reliable, accurate, and holds as many rounds as the Glock 19.

Well, if I want to make love to a gun, there is not much sexier than a 1911 or a GP100.
BUT, I can put 17 rounds into Man, Dog, or food, in less than 10 seconds with my Ruger American Competition Pro Duty.

As much as I love a 1911 in 45 acp it might have to be a 357 for its range of options. I believe I have 8 of each? Probably one of these 2 though.
