I prefer to call these unfortunate deaths POISONINGS. The drugs are being produced and imported by powerful cartels that are making billions at the (deadly) expense of our people. I don’t know the solution but there surely is one. Perhaps declaring all the cartels terrorist organizations and using the legal avenues available to seize their assets would be a start. But what do I know? I’m just an old man who knows nothing (according to those under 50).
It seems to me that reducing the demand needs to be the priority. Why do people think they need drugs? I'm not talking about addicts, what about teenagers?
Turd I think it's something that has been a problem since the beginning of time. They are looking for a buzz and or feel peer pressure. I never played with any illegal drugs or smoked pot. We were all young once but we made better choices in life. That's all I can come up with...
That and youth's belief in 'this can't happen to me'. I remember when I was in high school we used to have presentations on drugs with local cops and some of the convicts from the state prison come in and scare the H out of us....... Not sure any schools do that anymore.

My brother just lost his oldest son to Fentanyl a few months ago. His son was found dying in his car while sitting in a Safeway parking lot by the police. He died one day before his 32nd birthday.

That system worked pretty good in China when Mao came into power no more Opium Dens or users . Singapore also used and still uses that system for drugs. Singapore also had the Opium Dens , not anymore.
Now if you are caught in Singapore with drugs that weigh more than a dime you are considered a dealer and get the death penalty.
Our niece was found dead behind a dumpster with the needle still in her. This was 6 years ago on my wife's birthday. The girl was 31 and had been a drug addict for years. Her younger sister is following in her footsteps and their mother is blaming everyone else in the world for their behavior. She has enabled them both and still thinks that the one that is alive is going to magically stop. Both have been to rehab many times but have fallen back into drugs. I take a hard approach to it because of my family and got shrieked at by their mother who says that I really don't understand. I told her that I understand all too well and that she is enabling her surviving daughter. I walked away with her still screaming at me and I am waiting for the other one to be found dead. Fortunately they don't live close to us so I don't have much contact with them

May they RIP. I have a 16yo that I constantly worry about. Thankfully she is a good girl and so are her friends. GOD bless this youth with safety and brains.

I feel sad, but I'm not worked up over it. It happens every day. What are we doing to stop it?
When I was a kid we didn't even know what drugs were all about. Our parents (BOTH of them, not single parent households) would not let us do that kind of stuff and they watched us.
So what do we have today? Pot is being legalized, transgender surgery is kept from the parents. No accountability, school curriculum are producing morons (unless the parents teach as well)...on and on.
It's OUR generation's doing. WE elected these morons. WE let the kids run amok. Not ALL of us (certainly not in MY house), but way too many. I have in-laws (on the outlaw side of the family - related only by marriage) who can claim the blame.
I don't have any answers on how to fix it. I was watching a video by Franklin Graham (our beloved Billy Graham's son) on Easter. He was also sad about current events, but when asked how to fix it he said it may already be too late.

What war? In wars people are killed on both sides It's the drug dealers VS the U.S. Government and dot gov is losing. Oh wait a minute! Wasn't the CIA importing drugs to finance it's illegal operations. Weren't some of the drugs smuggled in via the dead bodies of our troops? Surely the powers that be knew full well what was going down with their silent approval. makes me wonder how many politicians are on the take for the cartels. Why haven't we TOLD Mexico that you clean it up or WE WILL?

Make it bloody as hell. Catch a street dealer in the act? Bang, one in the back of the head. Let him lay there for a couple of days with a notice stating drug dealers will die. Find out who their supplier is and again bag, on in the back of the head. I know a few people, more or less that I've met at the range who would if legal patrol the border on their own time and have no qualms taking out the "mules" bringing the drugs into the country. I believe that if those so inclined were made to believe that getting caught importing or selling drug was the most serious health hazard ever, it would not only cut back on the supply but possible stop it. It's an invasion, pure and simple. A war without shots fires in defense and we're losing. Thank out gutless politicians who just may or may not be complicit in the problem.
When I was growing, anyone who did drugs was labeled a "drug fiend" and shunned. Well at least by me. It just was not done. During the mid 1960s, one job I was on for almost two years hired a lot if hippies. Break time was something else and the pot smoke was such that it was impossible to not get a contact high. Probably one of the many reasons I left San Francisco for good. Several friends that worked there died from ODing and that made me very angry. I'm still angry when it comes to drugs.

They are now saying that is not very likely at all. The cops are having panic attacks.

We can put some of the blame on liberals in Hollyweird that glorify drug use in movies. Many people in that business become dependent in real life to drugs, both legal and illegal.

My personal view is that drug-using kids are a consequence of their parents' parenting. Harsh, I know, but....
Society want to blame gun violence on guns, not the trigger pullers. Same logic applies to drug-user deaths. The drugs don't inject themselves any more than the guns pull their own triggers.

Maybe its just me but I have little sympathy for those taking drugs that are illegal, or legal drugs that were not prescribed for them. A 20 something year old who goes to a party and accepts a pill from another partygoer does not get much sympathy from me, even if they end up being poisoned from what they ingested. I do have sympathy for those who got hooked on drugs after taking prescribed meds that they were told would relieve their pain but not cause addiction. They are the true victims of our current system.
I do have one relative who as a teenager was involved in taking illegal drugs. He has since straightened his life out and has become a responsible citizen and good family man. But when he was on drugs and once overdosed, part of me did not care if he did not survive, thinking that the trauma he was putting his family through would finally be over if he died.
This whole drug problem would not exist if people in this country were not morons seeking a drug high to escape reality.
I do have one relative who as a teenager was involved in taking illegal drugs. He has since straightened his life out and has become a responsible citizen and good family man. But when he was on drugs and once overdosed, part of me did not care if he did not survive, thinking that the trauma he was putting his family through would finally be over if he died.

Vito and Johnny-Ball I agree with both of you. Sometimes there is a kid from a good family who tries drugs and loses on the 1st attempt because of fentanyl but those are not frequent. If an addict can straighten out their life it is great and I do know a couple of guys who have done it. The people who become addicted to prescription pain medication have my sympathy because chronic pain is debilitating. I am fortunate to have a doctor who understands and prescribes me something. My pain is from a lifetime of working in cramped spaces in contorted positions and also stage 4 cancer. I can lead a normal productive life because of the medication. Otherwise I would have to limit my physical activity and virtually become a couch potato. Today I can mow my lawn with a push mower and then grill before I take a nap and then work midnight shift and then afternoon shift tomorrow. Anyone injecting illegal drugs is on the way to a toe tag and I have no sympathy for them. A friend of mine lives across from a park where addicts are frequently found with the needle still stuck in them. They are given Narcan just to keep repeating the behavior. How many times can you keep rescuing people bent on self destruction? A lot of volunteer fire departments spend much of their budget on Narcan and rescue the same idiots over and over. I hate to say it but if they let them die it wouldn't be much of a loss...
