Could have been 40mm "practice ammo" rather than .40 cal. Never heard of such a thing until I checked, as Salmoneye posted. When I qualified with the M79, all that was used was HE...... CS, WP, and Buckshot were also made for the M79, but never saw nor used them until I got to Vietnam.
