Some of you may have seen a comment by me about my recent trip and flying back from Saint Louise and when I got home the Swiss Army knife I had put in an outside pouch of my checked bag was gone. I will swear to you I looked in the pouch at least 3 times before putting the bag away. Today I pulled the bag out to see if the new hard gun case I ordered will fit in it and opened that outside pouch and there was the knife just sitting there. This is really not possible.. there are no hidden compartments or pouches inside this thing.. just a zippered pouch about 9" x 12" that is pretty much fully open when unzipped. If I did not know better I would swear that 'they' read my post... came by my house and snuck in and put the knife back. That is the only other possibility other than I'm just totally losing it.

The other weird part of this is I usually have two swiss army knives around...a nicked and cracked one for work and a nice clean one for dress. last time I lost one I looked for it for about 3 weeks and finally went to the hardware store and bought another one... when I got home my wife told me she had found 'this knife' in my washed clothes the other day and did I want it back? Now after losing this last one I went by last week, same local hardware store, and bought another one for 'dress'... to really double up on all this...three days ago I was washing and vacuuming our family car to go on a trip and found another swiss army knife under the drivers seat. This one has a pair of pliers on it and I don't ever remember owing one of those.

You were not wrong. Your SA knife really was gone. Stuff disappears into the Vortex of Another Dimension all the time, and then just as suddenly and magically reappears. Happened to me with a model car early this year, and with a particular book just a few months ago. Both turned up exactly where they should have been the whole time. :shock:

You've also once again proven Snake's Law of Finding Lost Stuff: When you can't find something, go buy another one. Within 24 hours of buying a new one, the old one will reappear. (In my two recent examples above, both items were old and not easily replaceable, if at all.)

:wink: This is why I own three or four of some tools or materials I don't use often, but when I do, I really really need them. :lol:

The only other way to find it is to look everywhere, then quit and forget about it. Then you need to lose or need to find something else as soon as possible (but, sadly, you cannot do this deliberately). As you are looking for the new lost thing, you will magically find the thing you were looking for last time.

I've only ever owned one Victorinox, and I've carried it every day since it was introduced in the late '80s. The cross is all but worn off of it now but it's still sharp and I use it for something several times a week. If I lost or broke it, I'd buy another one without hesitation.

Absolutely. This is why I own "several" tape measures. I'm actually not sure how many I do own because they seem to move around from place to place and I'm never real sure when I might come across one . . . or two . . .

Lost a .50 cal rimfire rifle. Tore the house apart. Since nothing else was noticed as missing I was satisfied that the house hadn't been burgled but where was the rifle. Years past and one day while moving a large chest, that we no longer used, lo and behold there, tucked under the chest was the long lost rifle. How it got there is still a mystery.

Snake's law is clearly true. Had an almost exact story as Blume, except mine were a set of car keys placed in luggage. I remembered where they were put, but could not find them. Six family members searched for hours. I had to postpone leaving on a family trip until $300 worth of keys could be cut. I finished the trip using the suspect luggage. Never found the keys. I took a few more trips over the next year, using the same suitcase. About a year and a half later, I pulled the suitcase out again for a trip. I unzipped the top outside pocket, and my keys were there. Exactly where I remembered putting them. How on Earth could that happen? Several people looked through the suitcase, multiple times. And it was used for multiple trips. The pocket isn't that big and I use it regularly for small items like chargers that are needed frequently.
No one in the family can figure it out.
I also have several Klein voltage detectors and wire strippers because of Snake's law.

I will admit to occasionally finding things that I forgot that I owned. I used a neighbor's bench grinder to sharpen a lawn mower blade last month. I thought it would be nice to have one of my own. I walked back to the house to put the blade back on the mower. How did I forget that I owned a bench grinder? Glad I didn't go out and buy another one.

I've read more than once, either about gunsmithing or car customizing or both, that coat hangers make lovely welding rods. Something about the steel in them is particularly suitable for the job.

Leaving the welding rods out of the conversation, and concentrating only on Blume's problem in the OP, around here it's gremlins who are responsible for most lost items. Playful little guys, they just love hiding stuff all over the house. I learned they will get bored with the game after being ignored for 24 hours, and can generally be counted on to return things after that time. Sooner, if one follows Snake's rule about buying a new one!

I can relate to Blume's SAK, as my pocket knives frequently disappear. I've only completely "lost" two of them in my life, but misplaced 'em many 100s of times over 50-some years. They belong in the right front pocket of my jeans. "Lost" ones are most usually found in the left front pocket, with the keys. Gremlins, I tell ya!

The way those little buggers are multiplying, when you finally get enough, open up a Swiss Army knife stand in front of your house. You could also sell kool aid on the side.

A friend just bought a gun like I carry in the warmer months, a Kahr PM40. I let him try my pocket holster to see if he likes it. I had a semi sticky holster that could do me in the meantime. I had it in my hand, and could have had it in my hand in 10 seconds for about 10 years. Now? Poof...:?

A few years ago, I was preparing to go on an extended vacation. I took all my firearms that wouldn't fit in the safes, and put them in the (dry) crawl space under the house. One item was the field barrel for my BPS shotgun (it had the rifled slug barrel mounted.) When I got back, I found everything but the BPS barrel. I have looked in every corner, in and under the house, but haven't found it---yet.

It is strange, I lost a Kershaw knife, so got another one. Less than a week later I was looking under the seat of my truck and there it was. Another knife appeared about late June when I took my car to the car wash. I had no Idea that it was missing. Same for two bricks of primers. I looked all over my reloading area several times to no avail. Two weeks ago I opened the cabinet door and there were the two bricks. In wide open plain sight, not hiding or anything!

One of my cast iron frying pans has been missing for about four years now. I suppose it's a goner.....

Sounds like I'm not the only one who finds lost things that mysteriously re-appear. but this one really bothers me, would not if I had just misplaced the knife and then it showed back up... I guess like the one that was under the car seat... (the first place to look when some small item is missing).... but this one was in the outside pocket of my checked bag... when the bag came off the conveyer the zipper was slightly open but the rain jacket I had stuck in there was till there and so I did not think about it until I started to unpack... pulled the jacket out and looked for the dern knife and it was gone... so, I figured it just fell out. Until I mentioned it here and someone said, "never put anything in your checked baggage outside pockets that you don't want to lose." I then left the bag on my couch for about 3 days and actually stuck my hand in the pocket at least three times just checking. No knife until I looked yesterday. Told my wife the three possibilities and she agrees it could be that TSA snuck by while we were out of town and put the knife back.

Different story.... 36 years ago wife and I went down to the Caribbean and ended up one day sailing with some ex-patriots.... they were quite interesting, one guy was retired from the Navy... there was some mention that his parter was in Florida 'on business' and there was something 'hinky' about the way he said it.... when we got back home I'm sure someone had been in our house....
