I had an out of battery discharge with my Mark II tonight

No damage done. But that was a first. I thought at first that the thing doubled on me. I don't think it did. I heard two bangs. I'm guessing one came out of the end of the barrel and the other came out of the action. But for sure I had a OBD. The front of the case and the rim were still there, but the middle was blown apart. Anyone have that happen on a Mark II?

If you heard two bangs, you almost certainly had a double. I doubt you would have heard one bang coming out of both ends of the gun as two different ones.

.22s do odd things sometimes for no apparent reason. Things like this remind us why we ALWAYS wear ear and especially eye protection when shooting, or even being around someone else who is shooting.

Good call. After eye surgery to remove a shard of brass from my left eye 4 years ago, I now remember to wear my eye protection. I'm lucky I'm wering glasses and not an eye patch.

Here is what I believe happened with an OOB .22 kaboom I had:

One round fired normally. In feeding the next round, something prevented it from chambering fully, brought it to a sudden stop, and the extractor acted as a firing pin and set it off. Since that time I've kept the chamber of that gun very clean (it's a tight chamber) and haven't had the problem again. I also polished the camming face of the extractor very smooth so that it can more easily ride over the rim in such a case.

That's a very interesting theory. And it sounds like it could explain my situation. I've never had an OOBD or a gun double on me before. Fortunately, I did have my eye protection on.

Glad you or nobody else was hurt. An eye openner. Some folks tend to discount what a rimfire gone wild can do. I'd thoroughly check it out in the least, or have it done professionally. All it takes is one more time - you got away with the first.
