The M&P HD series is the perfect sidearm. This coming from a 1911 guy. I fell down the rabbit hole a few weeks ago and watched over a dozen torture tests for the M&P series handguns. They convinced me to try one out, I have never owned a striker fired gun. I purchased a new 2026 SHOT release steel frame model with a thumb safety.

It now has about 3,000 rounds of assorted ammo through it, everything from cheap TUL to Buffalo Bore outdoorsman. The guy fired everything I fed it and its accurate, absurdly accurate for a mass produced gun. It consistantly shot 1" at 25 yards with Winchester 115 Service Grade ammo. Thats as good, if not better, than my 9mm wilson supergrade 1911 which cost (literally) 10 times as much.

The grip texture is incredibly tacticle and sticks to your hand like spider webbing. I fired it in the rain and had no issues maintaining positive control.

One gripe is that the optic plates are plastic, although I tried to abuse them none failed. I used the optic to rack the slide probably a dozen times with not looseing or issues with the plate.

The trigger was my only other complaint, my buddy who shoots glocks, says its really good but coming from the 1911 world I thought it was awful. So, I swapped it out to an Overwatch precision kit and its lightyears better, feels like a well tuned revolver now.

Any way thats my .02

I've had two of the M&P Shields, one in the 9mm and my current EDC is the Shield in 45ACP. Both performed perfectly, never had a jam or misfire in either one of them. I'm also a die-hard 1911 fan, and a fan of the Glock, but I've but my Glock 43 away in favor of the Shield as an EDC.

Same here, long-time 1911 and Browning Hi-Power fan, but I bought an M&P 9 full-size at a bargain a while back, and I'm loving it. My first striker-fired gun. It hasn't missed a lick in several hundred rounds, enough that I've made it my bedside gun. It may lead me to another first, a weapon light - since it has a rail. Came with two mags, i need to get a couple more.

There are many perfect sidearms available to is today. We are fortunate to have so many viable options.

Interesting to me that the first striker fired guns were made almost 200 years ago.
Yet we still consider them to be modern.

My model 99 savage is striker fired. The 870 shotgun is hammer fired. Without taking them apart you would be hard pressed to know which one has a hammer.

The broomhandled Mauser is striker fired, which predates the 1911.

To be fair it took Glock to really popularize striker fired handguns, in 1982! Over 40 years ago.

Anyway I’m glad you found a gun you like, and can rely on.
