I've always enjoyed hunting with a single shot , muzzle loader or modern rifle. I had a pretty good assortment of #1's a while back. As Ive gotten older I started thinning them out. This is the only one I have left. Its a .300 Win mag. Sent it to Mark Penrod some years back. He did a trigger job , and worked on tuning the action and bedding it. This is the best Buck I've taken with it. We were outfitting in Colestrip Montana at the time.

The Ruger #1 is and has been the best looking rifle in my humble opinion. I found one in .243 cal in the used rack at a local gun shop. Didn't have a mark or scratch anywhere on it. Have got 5 deer in the last 7 years with it and it will always be my favorite deer rifle.
That is one hell of a nice buck!

I own a few of the harder to find recent issues. The most recent a 300 H&H, circa 2010. I am working on a Tanzania plains game hunt and think the #1 is fitting.

I had a chance to buy a #1 in 7x57 for a really good price once upon a time. Dad was with me and asked me why the heck I wanted a single shot. At current prices, I could have 10X'd the asked for price. 
That is all I have used for the last 10+ years. I've taken all my moose with a No.1S in 300 WM. I even had two No.1 rifle re-barreled to 35 Rem., a RSI and a K-1B. I shot two with the K-1B last fall.

I hve that same model #1 n .300 Win. Mag. and it is dead nuts accurate. I haven't hunted for some time now due partly health reasons and partly the ranch owner and the outfitter had as one of their rules, "NO SINGLE HOT RIFLE." Funny thing is every elk I took off that place was a one shot, one kill deal. I tried talking them into letting me use my #1 on my next booking but they just would not allow it. I don't use them anymore.

I enjoy the Ruger Singles.
My only number 1 is chambered in 458 WM. I was looking for a 300 wm or 7mm to hopefully do elk if I get drawn, but the 458 showed up at a very reasonable price an I jumped on it. It can be loaded not so hot and still work, but of course I don’t reload. Funny how your gun math works when you really want something. I think the ruger number 1 is one of the most attractive looking of the Everyman’s guns. I just love them. Hopefully one day I’ll have one in a regular Caliber, but I do really hope to take something with the one I have.

Lee Martin (el numero uno - here on the forum) made me a happy camper a few years back with a No. 1 in .308Win. It looks pretty nice and shoots even nicer.
That's one fine rifle rack right there.
My buddy's dad has a #1 in .458win and he down loads it to .45-70 ballistics.
Has taken a bunch of deer with it, no muss, no fuss.

I can understand this rule. I hunted with a guy who was so sure of himself that he only loaded one round in his magazine fed rifle. Turned out he wasn't as good as he thought he was and he didn't deliver a follow up shot on his elk. It escaped after a long and fruitless tracking job that scattered the elk off the ranch the rest of us were hunting.

I've done quite a bit of my hunting with Ruger #1s and I've always made it a practice, no a rule that I reload as rapidly as I can even if the animal dropped like a rock at the bullet's strike. They do sometimes require a second shot even if the first one was fatal. It doesn't take long to learn how to do a rapid reload. A couple of dummy rounds and about five minutes a day, every day, a few weeks prior to the hunt will usually suffice.partly the ranch owner and the outfitter had as one of their rules, "NO SINGLE HOT RIFLE."

I had my SIL make me some "Speed-loader" for my No.1 in various calibers. 3D printed with just a couple of rare earth magnets to hold them in place.

That's a neat idea. All I'd worry about would be the eventual wearing of the bluing where the magnets would rub.
Number 1 in .35 Remington? What a dream gun!

Nice idea. I was thinking about going that way and my late wife was going to convert one of the elastic cartridge bands so I could either use it or take it off. Sadly, she passed before it came about. I have two ways to go. Use one of those elastic bands or a sloppy looking but workable system that will only work if I'm shooting .300 Win.Mag. The butt bands usually hold ten rounds but I space them one round, empty space, another round then empty space and so on. Having the space between the cartridges makes it a lot easier to grab the next round for that rapid reload. Give it a try.
