hey will eat a lot of small bugs too as they need protein to survive and don't just eat sugar water.

Hi,

I've never seen them eating bugs. I've read aphids are among their favorite prey, though my roses don't back that up. The sugar water is apparently just a quick energy source to go get the bugs. Avian "carbo loading?" Or so say the "experts!"
