Now,, In a safe,, I do not store guns in any kind of material that can hold moisture. Gun rugs, socks etc. I use the oily rag treatment, AND a "Golden Rod" dehumidifier inside the safe.
Plus,, if I go shooting and there is a noticeable difference in the outside temps, and indoors,, due to the potential for condensation,, I wipe the guns, then let them "adjust" to the room temps, and wipe again.
Longer term storage, the use of a wax is also used. Finding Johnson's Paste Wax isn't easy anymore. It's a good choice if you can find any. So I use Renaissance Wax,, which is used by museums to preserve guns.
