hows 4227 powder

A friend has 3 or 4 different types on powder for .357 mag.....
I started with loading up a box with 16. grs of 4227 for 158gr.JHP, anyone else useing this?? Feed back ? Havent shot any yet.
He 's got some 2400, h-110, 296, Unique.. Looking for just under MAX hunting loads with a 158grJHP... Useing a Ruger GP100 6".....

Ideals ????? Thanks
 
I use a lot of H4227 in different calibers. I go by the books, AND what the gun likes. Experimenting is half the fun of reloading. See what your loading manuels say, then start trying things. You may find you like the powder, (or rather, your gun does.)
 
My Speer #9 Manual indicates that if you're using a 158 jacketed bullet and MV is the object, you'll get more performance out of 2400 than IMR4227. Reason is, as your quest for MV continues upwards, you'll reach maximum acceptable pressures sooner with IMR4227 than with 2400. His findings also indicates that it takes less 2400 to obtain X-amount of velocity. That tells me that 2400 is the more efficient of the two when used in 357 caliber guns.
FWIW, the gun used for testing was a 6" Ruger Security Six.

About your IMR4227/16 Grn load, it aint max for a 158 bullet but it is getting close. Just bear in mind that all jacketed bullets are not created equal. Some are slightly fatter than others, some are slightly heavier than others, and some protrude into the case further than others. All of those things effects pressures, so be dern-carefull aproaching maximum charges that are listed with this or that componant(s). And that goes for all bullets, all calibers, and all powders.

I think thats very good advice, thanks.. I'm going to give "h-110" at .5 grs under max load data a try next...
