How many different loads ??

I reload 45 colt and 327 Fed and have several different powders and cast for both just one mold each. How many different loads do you all use? I'm thinking on just sticking with 1 or 2 for each cal and then a hunting load. Just wondering what you all do.
 
Well, I am shooting for two in each caliber. One light/medium and eventually one hot. Still on the search for that perfect 'load' so still buying/trying different powders for fun (just started working with AA#5 for example). However in general, I have a load for each caliber. I have settled on the Skeeter load for .44Spec. In .357 it is Red Dot under 158g SWC. Those two have been 'put to bed' so to speak.... My goto powder load for .45 Colt is IMR 4227 and HS-6 for a hotter load. The .44Mag it is still up in the air, but leaning toward Red Dot right now for the light/medium load. I suspect H-110 will enter the picture when I get around to the hot stuff of which I have no current need (Not a big fan of hand beating when I am just punching paper or smacking steel) .....

Forgot to mention, I also keep 777 around for BP fun in .45 Colt. So there is one more powder. I like 777 because I don't have to have special lubed bullets or a special powder measure... Just load normally and still get the boom, grime, smoke, and cleanup :) .

I have to feed 12 Ruger Single Actions, 1 Winchester 94AE Trapper and 1 Marlin 1894 all in .45 Colt.

For the .41mag, .357 mag and .32 Mag I only have a couple of loads for each.

Well my break from the reloading room is over, back to brass prep. :lol:

Probably already have more ammo than I'll ever shoot in my lifetime, but I have fun.

The one 'n only 45LC load that I use is a 250-ish soft cast SWC over 8.0-8.5 Unique. After many testing sessions with other bullets/powders during my youth, that is what I settled on. The variance in powder charge that you see is because over the years, I've found that some guns prefer a bit more powder than others. Point is, if you have a 45LC gun that won't hold a nice group somewhere within that load range, your gun is need of some sort of attention.
That, and I've never seen the need to hot-rod the 45 Colt. It does everything that I've needed it to do perty-much as-is. Heck, even the so-called "weak" factory loads have far more stopping power than their paper-ballistics suggest.

Can't help with the .327 Fed other than to say that when you're fooling with a small bore 6-gun and need it to stike a serious blow, you're almost obliged to use a high speed/high pressure load.
That just aint my thing. I don't even own a pistol-cleaning brush that small. :wink: .

I load 44mag/44special and 357mag/38special as well as a couple other cartridges. By loading to three different power levels with four different powders I have almost 24 different loads for just the magnum cartridges. That doesn't include the specials or the hunting or target loads.

I am sure that in total I have on hand, and load over 50 different loads. 8) 8)

I have found that a few of my guns are picky about accuracy. So, I have special loads for them. Then, I have found that others in the same caliber can digest just about anything. So, I have a good load for all of them. I look at my selection of powders, bullets, etc as just good stocking.
 
I currently reload 4 different loads for .45 Colt, 3 for .44Mag and 2 (light game and heavy game) for .308 Winchester

Those are the only three I load so far but I'm looking into reloading 9mm
 
I am sure that I am not alone among reloaders of .45 Colt. The old .45 is so much fun to play with.

I have in my data 14 different reload recipes, using both cast lead and jacketed bullets, of 7 different weights (200 grains is the lightest; 300 grains is the heaviest), both standard and magnum primers, and 5 different powders (Unique, Bullseye, Bluedot, H110, and W296.

Fun, fun, fun :D
 
I cast and reload for about 10 guns. I have favorite loads for most of them but I am always trying new loads. A new powder, a new bullet design or alloy, or simply a different crimp, or reloading method. Keeps the fun in my hobby...

I have the load that shoots the most accurate and will fill the most common need for the gun. Be it hunting or just shooting. For guns that pull double duty I have a load that will do everything I ask price be damned. Then a cheap load for just casual shooting or extended trigger time. Only real goal is accuracy and similar point of impact to my top shelf load. I have go to cheap loads but I am always playing with things I got a deal on. Once I have to buy components I go back to my chosen brand.

But being a hoarder I don't think I will ever be buying anything for casual shooting. Only thing that might get low is powder and primers key word might. Premium bullets only buy when on sale or I am absolutely out.

I am always playing with different powders. Only cause I have a bunch to play with. Got a deal from a range member. His dad passed and he was selling off his reloading supplies. Wife wanted powder out of the house. Got around 30 pounds most sealed all other in current packaging for a hundred bucks. Lots of play time there.
 
I reload for:
32 H&R, 32-20 and 327 Mag
38 Sp, 357 Mag
38-40
41 Sp, 41 Mag
44 Sp, 44 Mag, 44-40 and
45 Colt.
At any given time I probably have 100 to 200 loaded rounds for each caliber. Currently using 7 or 8 different powders. Although each revolver prefers certain combinations of powder/bullet, how do you know unless you keep trying? Half the fun of shooting is reloading...
 
I simplified over the last few years. Fewer than 6 powders, and just five calibers now. I have my "standard" bulk loads which are for range/plinking use and a few specialties along with some alternatives that use Universal powder across the board in case one of my favorite powders becomes unavailable. My bullet selection is limited to the standards for the caliber, mostly Rainer/Berry plated and a few boxes of premium. Topped off with all the brass I can get my hands on. I spent some time developing good loads that cycle and are reasonably accurate for my guns and like to keep it simple and stick with those loads. YMMV
 
Well I can't wait to see where this gets me-- I will NOT use unique, bullseye, 2400 or H110. Why? Because everyone else does. I like to try different powder and bullet combos and when you find a good one it is very gratifying. I load for-- 38 spl,357mag,45acp and 45 Colt at this time, but there are dozens of cal. I have loaded for. I use at least 15 different powders and right now I have 3-4 diff brands and weights of bullets for each cal. Lead and Jacketed. I do have pet loads and keep a supply of them on hand. My fun comes with experimentation within reason and safety parameters.
 
I'm down to only nine toolheads, about 21 handgun powders, under 75 different bullets, and no longer do much other than 9x19, 9x21, 38 Special, 357 Magnum, 40 S&W, 400 CorBon, 41 AE, 44 Magnum, and 45 ACP.

Yep, simplified.....
 
I load 9mm, .38-.357, 30 M1 Carbine .40 S&W, 41 Mag, 44 Mag, 45LC, 45ACP, 454 Casuall, and .460 S&W Mag
All loaded with either Hodgdon Universal or Alliant 2400
For handguns, those 2 powders are all you need. :)

For my magnums I have several loads but only one powder.
.357mag
.41mag
.44mag

I use only one powder and thats H-110. I do have diffrent bullet grains for the .41 mag and .44 mag ie. 180gr jhp, 200gr jhp, 200gr sjsp, 240grjhp & sjsp.
For my .357mag I only use one bullet and that is the 158gr jhp.

Also the majority of my bullets are made by Hornady and sierra, nosiler
