Well, it seems that I am possessed of a really large hiatal hernia that requires surgery, which will happen tomorrow at the San Francisco VA at 0600.
Briefly, a hiatal hernia is a rupture in the diaphragm around the esophagus...lots of people have them, but mine is big enough to require laparoscopic surgery.
In other words, my stomach is up around my heart and lungs. Painful, and no fun.
Major risky surgery...I do know the surgeon and trust her so there's that.
So if I don't post for a while, that's what's happening with me....carry on...
Well, the surgery went well. The surgeon described her work in terms that I could understand, and is pleased with her work, which she should be.The operation took about 4 hours because there were some bumps in the road, not easily seen on imaging.
I'm pretty damn sore; laparoscopic surgery demands the the body cavity be filled with CO2, then deflated. Some of this is still being absorbed.
The VA staff was terrific. From the nurses assistants to the Chief of General Surgery they coul not have been more helpful.
Healing is gonna take a long time...
Jeff
