Just picked up in a trade a M77RS Hollowbolt in 7x57mm, serial #70-40xxx. Any thoughts on rarity or issues with this chambering?

My thoughts...I love the 7X57, a great cartridge. The HB RS is fairly rare or quite uncommon. Have one and have seen one other, now yours. So not many, and I am always looking for older M77 7X57s. Good find. Won't ask the price, cause I knows whens I wants it, I's buys it. Enjoy.

BTW, ever consider ridding your self of it, drop me a line.

I really like the 7x57 and have an M77 built in '72 in that caliber. That era ruger in 7x57 has a long throat. Mine really only like the 175 grain round nose bullets, but I get about 1.25" 3 shot groups at 100 yards using hornady interlocks seated to the cannelure. Nice pick-up!

Thanks for the comments. It's not collector, but more of a shooter grade rifle, which is fine since I'll hunt with it. Traded a L.N.I.B. #73 prefix R in .243 with it's fat stock profile for the 7x57.

Ruger records lettered this rifle being shipped in Oct. 1971 as a M77S with sights, but no factory rings. Is this rare or uncommon?

Any rifle that is an M77S is uncommon. However, without the original box or a records check with Ruger there's not way to tell if it is an S or an RS.

As an RS hollowbolt it is rare in 7x57. Now that you know it is an S, it's even more rare.

Having the original box, marked M77S, would significantly raise the value, of course condition dependent. IOW, if it's in poor condition, the value will go way down.

Chet15 surely needs to add it to his database.

Yes, any "S" or "RS" from that era is pretty tough to find. The flatbolt RS in a 7x57 is pretty much non existent but I know of a couple.
To me the "S" and "RS" are pretty much the same thing, I don't know how the rest of you feel about it. Sure, they were shipped as two different models, but both rifles look identical, the only difference of course being with or without the "accessory" rings.
