Holidays and house problems

Why is it that important stuff always seems to go belly up on Holiday weekends? Our 1 year old split system HVAC quit about 2 hrs ago, and the temp is pushing 85* today. This ain't the first time something essential has done this to me during a Holiday. :x Is this some kind of conspiracy between manufacturers and mother nature? Repair guy said he might be able to get to us before Thur. :roll: This is MS dude. It get hot here this time of year. :roll:

That has happened to me as well. Only saving grace, we have two HVAC systems so we just move to the other side of the house. Guess you could always run to Wally World and get a 110v AC for your bedroom window.

Yep, the wife had her front top cap come off her tooth saturday morning. The emergency number on the dentists recorder went to voice mail. You guessed it---no return call yet. Guess she will have to stay away from the corn on the cob tomorrow.

It's just murphy, if it happens it'll happen at a bad time.
Multiple breakers or fuses involved, one for a/c, one for blower, etc. A disconnect at or near the outdoor unit may be a breaker. You have checked the thermostat? of course you have. But sometimes they can get bumped or rubbed against and get out of whack. Tap the stat with the end of your finger, older ones had mechanical contacts that can stick. The belt off the blower? Not much else I can thick of without a set of gauges & a multi-meter. Suggestions just in case you aren't the mister fixit type.

Or...... the beverage/beverages of your choice underneath a big old shade tree? With a manually operated fan(wooden paint stir stick with a piece of cardboard stapled to it.) It's only 91* here, shade tree sounds inviting.
You have an ice cream maker? A watermelon stand near by? When life gives you lemons, get out the Vodka, or bar-b-q something & ice down the beer? I get that mixed up sometimes.

Wasn't jimbo357 an HVAC guy before he retired? Where are you Jimbo.

Got outside, take the cover off the unit and find the box with all the wires going in and out and whop the heck out of it... it can't hurt.

Many years ago we sat in the living room wrapped in blankets and with a kerosene heater burning when we lost our furnace and it was 'well digger feet' cold. Once burned; we decided to not have that happen again. Which is why we have the AC and furnace inspected, and repaired if necessary, in the Spring before Summer arrives and again in the Fall before the cold weather hits.

Yep, I got a day off today so was going to sleep in. Wife woke me up anway with "The wind last night blew a big limb down you have to do something with and I think the fridge/freezer is not working." I checked and the local appliance place is closed today so I'm betting I have to take the pickup 90 miles to the bigger town tomorrow to pick up a new one. Lucky I had a little deep freeze in the other room and an old dorm fridge in the shop to tranfer food to.

Something to said for wall/window units. I came home one summer night a few years ago, the A/C in my bedroom was finished. Really ticked me off, I paid good money for that GE/PRC contraption-$20 at a yard sale. Pulled in out, put a replacement in.
Isn't there a similar rule for motor vehicles-the complication of a breakdown is in direct relationship to the distance from home.

Got it fixed about 30 minutes ago. Frayed wire in the low voltage circuit in the heat pump caused a 3amp fuse to blow in the air mover and the whole system shut down. No charge, warranty covered it.

HEY AJ; Head to the nearest drugstore and buy a pack of "DentuTemp"; read the directions and glue it back on until she can get to the dentist; I got a pair of molar crowns from the early 70's, one has never failed, the other pops off every three or four months, clean the tooth, clean the inside of the crown, load it with the above repair material stick it on the tooth and bite down. It's good to go for another 3 to 4 months. You just gotta wait about 2 hours before eating.
