What years did Ruger have the high polish deep blueing on the old model super blackhawks?
Can a 1965 super Blackhawk have a high polish deep blueing or should it be dull blue?
The serial number is 20XX is this a 1965 year gun?

A 4 digit, #20XX gun would have been made in 1960,, not 1965. And,,, it's likely a dull polish version. The high polish guns started around 8/29/60, with a serial number range of 3431 to 8650.

As Contender said per the RENE the high polish guns started at 8/29/1960 and continued to the end of the Old Models sometime in early 1973. Some early 4 digit Supers with 4 digits serial numbers with high polish finish were, Long Grip Frame 1525, only one. Regular frame guns 1769, 1886, 2367, 2430, 2672, 3199, 3307, 3445, 3465, and 3526. There are also dull polish finished guns with in these serial numbers. As you can see that gun, serial number 20xx, could have the high polish finish or it could have the dull polish finish.

Of course with Ruger there are always exceptions. Number 9 is a long frame white box gun with the high polish. Number 70 is a high polish 72 is a dull finish. A few of my #70 guns seem to have had special treatment on the bluing and wood stocks and grips.

1960 "WOW" this gun looks like it is unfired its that nice & clean!
What should the box look like and how can I tell if its a long frame?
Should I snag it?LOLOLOL

Super with a 20xx number should have a wood box. Take the grips off and see if they are marked with a "c" in the inside of the wood grip panel. should be marked on both of the wood panels. If the "c" is there is should be a long frame. Should you snag it? depends on the price and condition and if it might be a refinished. Since you asked about the box I assume the box is not with it.

Should have a C stamped on each grip panel like this for a long frame.

Deserttrans, thanks for posting the picture. As they say a picture is worth a thousand words. How come that long frame is not in Utah where it can be with its brothers?

Gee John! I do not know. I know sometimes it feels sad being just a little different from the other SBH's. I just tell it that size does matter

As hinted at in this post, how an early Super looks all depends on its ship date. With the high polish blueing, there were issues on some guns getting it just right, so some were held until more time could be given to them, and then shipped out later. This includes guns known to have been shipped in April 1965 (along with a lot of "S" guns in the Single-Six and Lightweight Single-Six model). Some of these Supers shipped late in April 1965 are also known to have the scarce "INC." barrel address, attesting to their late shipment.
That serial number 9 was a special case of being reserved for high profile gun writer/editor John Amber. It just didn't get completed and shipped until after the high polish had come into regular practice and after the white case shipping box came into use.

Chad You have to admit it sure makes it more interesting. Sure am glad you have taken the great amount of tme and effort to help your fellow collectors. Just wanted to let you know that tour efforts are appreciated.

Ruger 1441, believe me...I have had the most fun deciphering many of these old mysteries. Many of the answers are right in front of us, just have to put all the clues together to find it.
