Just saw this on Facebook. Does this affect you ????????????

This isn't good. Lake Lure Dam is on the brink of failure in Rutherford County, North Carolina. Evacuations ordered downstream.

I saw where that dam was built back in 1925 & 1926. Wow!
While I was with DOI, I did several analyses on the impacts of dams here in the PNW. BOR (Bureau of Reclamation) said the "life" of a dam was100-125 years. We found several that were unsafe after 50 years!

From google maps it looks like Ty is upriver and having been in the area before he on slightly higher ground. Having said that the whole area was hit hard with winds and power outages, praying for the whole community

From Contender's past posts, his Post Office is in Mill Spring which is shown on one of Jim's maps. It would appear he lives above the dam, I think. I hope. I would guess he isn't too worried about being on the internet right now. 🙏 🙏 🙏

Turd, good, thanks for asking. It was supposed to right over the top of me but veered right overnight. Those to the east of the main storm are always the ones who get hammered, like Tyrone. I was to the west of it. We got about 5" of rain and a few trees down across the roads. Not even an event here.

Yes, I live in NW GA.

I think that’s the first warning for a dam failure that I’ve heard of in quite a few years. I’m sure hoping contender is in a safe area and he’s got the provisions and Support for a lengthy road closure. That’s if the damn fails of course. Praying that he’s going to be OK and for anyone else in that area affected by the weather.

While I too, along with many others hope @contender is safe and sound... after spending too much time in the gun control and politics section, this thread right here, with all of the love and concern for another member, makes me reconsider my decision to leave this forum. God bless you all!

While I too hope Contender is high and dry… if I spent 15 minutes in the political section here I too would want to leave. 😀

I also just read on the news that a structural engineer decided the dam is safe.

Meanwhile, officials in Rutherford County, North Carolina told residents downstream of the Lake Lure Dam to flee to higher ground due to floodwater overflowing the top of the 124-ft-high barrier and pouring "uncontrolled" around the edges.

"Water is cresting the dam and flowing around the side walls. Structural supports have been compromised, but the dam wall is currently holding," said the county emergency management department at 1:44pm local time.
