Help with information on this revolver

At church yesterday doing my duty on the safety team and one of our team members showed me this little handgun she found in her late mother's stuff: (says on it: "Wesson & Harrington". 7 shot and pat. pending 1871?)

 
Looks like a Wesson & Harrington No. 2 revolver, if that .22 cartridge is correct for it...

On a possibly related subject: I have seen conflicting information as to whether or not it's safe to use any modern .22 rimfire ammunition in antique firearms. If someone who actually knows could clarify the matter, it might be helpful!
