Hey all
Some of you may recall the Ruger Mk1 .270 (tang safety) that I picked up a while back and posted on the forums here.
Well I finally got to the range today and ran into some problems. Accuracy was not the issue - ejection and holding onto the shell was.

Whether a shell had been fired or not, when I would work the bolt back - the shell would sometimes be gripped by the bolt and when it almost gets out, the extractor or somehow it would just kind of pop off and lay in the gun.
The other part of the time - fired or unfired shells - the bolt would not even grab the shells, they would just sit in the chamber.

For the record, the shells were new remington core lokts, 150 grain pointed soft points.

Is this an extractor issue? Is that little spring loaded thing in the corner of the bolt pushing too hard on the shell? I have no clue.
Playing with it in the basement, if I press fingers hard against the side of the extractor - all the way as the bolt slides out, then it seems to eject fine.

Help..anyone?

Hi sounds like the extractor is worn I had the same problem with a tang saftey in 7x57 the factory wanted me to send it in but they did send me the part it does take a little fitting and a special set of pliers to install

bigdog02, It could be the extractor has lost it "temper". It could also be the extractor "ring" too loose to effect the right tension in securing the extractor to the bolt. If your not sure, then take it to a local "competent" gunsmith to check out. With these Rugers, it's usually the extractor "ring". You can usually take it off the bolt and spread the "lips" a little. Don't spread them too far as it is tempered to be it's own spring!.....................Dick

Excellent info all around, thanks!

Now just to figure out where to get an extractor and collar.....midway has one that supposedly fits the m77.

I guess the collar would be the same as the MKII version.

Yes, the "ring" (collar is the proper term) is the same on both models............Dick

Another question I have.
I happened to look at my ejected shells and noticed something....
ALL of them are flat spotted on the neck.
As the bolt comes back, the ejector SLAMS the shell into the side of the receiver, the neck rides along the receiver til it hits the opening and then ejects (when it actually works - still waiting on the new extractor).

Edit: this appears to be normal, and i did nothing yet now it is ejecting every shell i put into it - live and fired....wtf.
