Texas grips has a pretty accurate description of Ruger grip sizes. This is almost right:

"Ruger also produced the XRN-3RED frame in a “short” version. That grip frame is about 1/4” shorter than the standard XRN-3RED and was released on the Single-Six with Vaquero sights on the standard stainless frame."

It should read: "Ruger also produced the XRN-3RED frame in a “short” version. That grip frame is about 1/4” shorter than the standard XRN-3RED and was released on the Single-Six 32 mag only with Vaquero sights on the small stainless and blue steel frame.

The Single Six 22 with Vaquero (fixed) sights does not have the "short" version.

The grip frame casting numbers they use are not complete; different vintage New Model grip frame numbers change depending on the vintage and grip frame material, alloy, steel or SS.
References to a 5 5/8" barrel lengths is a typo; should read 4 5/8".

Yes that's very thorough especially with the introduction dates of the changes. and photos.
A few things are left out:

1. All the casting code number changes are not included. The XR3-RED Size new models will be found with:
Earliest production = KXR-3,
Next = KXR-3 with a separate N,
Late = K (in circle) XRN-3,
More current = no casting #

2. The New Vaquero has the new XR3 size grip frame EXCEPT the NV .44 Mag does not, it has the new XR3-RED size. The Flattop Blackhawk 44 Mag however does have the XR3 size grip frame.

3. The XR3 size is only 7/16" thick while all other Ryger grip frames are 1/2".

4. Terms like "smaller" and "standard" cylinder frame are confusing especially to those not as familiar with Ruger frame sizes.
Ruger has:
-- a small frame (.22 and .32 SS, Super SS, Wrangler),
-- mid size frame OM .357, NM flattop Blackhawks, and New Vaqueros (except 44 mag is the large frame in both models),
-- large frame (all other Blackhawks and Super BH)
-- extra long frames (357 maximum, etc.)

True! But then they've been in business 76 years, that's a lot of evolution, innovation and new or modified products. That's what it takes these days to stay in business and maintain interest in their products. I think about how many Ruger owners own more than one Ruger product, even multiples of the same type or model. That's how to market to all segments of the shooting public.

S&W grips are very easy to figure out and they’ve been making revolvers a lot longer than Ruger.

Actually Ruger double action grips are easy too, its just the single actions that are confusing.🫤

Single actions hadn't changed for 80 years during the reign of the Colt Single action Army and were considered an antiquated design although still had a strong following, especially during the proliferation of TV westerns starting in the 1950s. Ruger foresaw the market demand and brought the SA into the modern era. Pioneering manufacturing changes to make them affordable with investment casting and caliber specific main frame sizes, Ruger makes changes in response to market demand that continues to this day.
