Hearing implants

Don't have them. But I know a young lady that has two due to a congenital condition. She keeps her hair long and it covers the implants well. She regularly wears ball caps. He graduation cap, and you know how those fit, didn't cause any issues.

Mind you she was about ten when she had the first. It took her about a minute to figure out she could plug her music in and tune out the world. Kids are pretty darned good with tech stuff. I'm sure your doctors have explained about the learning curve. She was fortunate in that the hearing failed in one ear and gave her time to acclimate to one implant before she required the second. The learning curve on the second was much shorter. Remember, you are training your brain to interpret completely different signals. She claim the music actually helped in the process (although I think it was just to tune out her parents). Kids!

That’s for that detail review really appreciated

I can only imagine the experience of going from profound deafness to hearing again. My high frequency hearing loss is close to 90%. The new adjustments made by Miracle Ear are difficult to process. I'd forgotten just how LOUD the World can be.

I'm on the verge of needing hearing aids. Fortunately my health insurance covers a pretty good portion. And the provider is noted as being one of the best in SoCal.

One thing I have learned is that good aids can be "tuned" to provide both comfort and better hearing.

Sadly I have quite a few male relatives who already require aids. The biggest common denominator is military service.

Our hearing damage started there but forget getting the VA to admit to anything.

That’s why I am starting at Kaiser and take it from there maybe all I need is a new set of aids I had thus set for 5 years or so

A friend of mine who was unhappy with the performance of his hearing aids so checked into the Cochlear implants and was told you have to be deaf to qualify for them. That’s tough because you lose the ability to recognize some speech pretty quickly.

Cochlear implants are a wonderful thing. But, let me ask you this. Would you rather have two functioning legs or two prosthetic legs. I assure the young lady I know would much prefer natural hearing. Even hearing that is augmented by hearing aids is better that relying on implants. So the "requirement" to be profoundly deaf before implants are used makes good sense.

I have been wearing hearing aids since 2000, every couple of years upgrading them. Three years ago I changed to a new ENT provider and new audiologist and told them I was really struggling with my three month old aids. They ran me through a new battery of tests and afterwards he said, "you're in the wrong type of aid." On the left I was complaining that it was garbled and he said that the tests showed that I only understood about 10% of the words on that side, so the prior provider kept giving me more volume, but that was just introducing more noise and making it more difficult for me to understand as a result.

So I replaced the new aids with Cros system. The left aid is simply a microphone to pick up sounds from that side and transmit it to the right aid so I can hear what is coming from that side. Made a big difference.

But after the first of the year I am investigating a Cochlear implant with University of Michigan hearing/cochlear implant group. Now I find that I need more assistance again and not sure that upgrading my aids will do it for me. My current ENT and audiologist don't do the cochlear implant so checking with UofM to see what they have to say. A friend had it done several months ago and he said it is great - we are both members of an organization and at meetings he doesn't struggle to follow the conversations at the meeting now and our hearing is similar.

I've been using V.A. issued hearing aids for the last 25 years or so. I've been told that the ones I have now are "state of the art", but they still are far from a cure for my hearing loss. I find the effect of the hearing loss is not that I do not hear someone talking, I just don't understand what they are saying. The hearing aids help, but are certainly no a cure all. Recently I went to an actual movie theater but stupidly forgot to have my hearing aids with me. I left the theater less than halfway through the movie because while I could hear the dialogue I could not discern at all what was being said. At home I have a gadget that attaches to my T.V. through the optical audio output and transmits via Bluetooth directly to my hearing aids, allowing me to fully hear and understand what is happening. That's the only time of the day when I feel that I really can hear well.

As to cochlear implants, I have a nephew that had this done. He suddenly went almost totally deaf and was considered a prime candidate for the implant. For the first few months he felt that he could not hear well enough to work effectively, but over time his brain learned how to interpret the information coming from the implant as speech. About six months after the operation he was at the point where he feels he is "hearing" as well as he ever did before going deaf. He keeps his hair very, very short so the implant is very visible, but easily wears a knit cap in cold weather or a baseball cap in warmer weather. He works as a project manager for a very high end construction firm and does very well despite the implant.

Their aint no guarantees with medical stuff (except in amputations, they can guarantee the part wont be there). Wife has vertigo, surgery? no guarantee it will help an she loses all hearing in that ear). I think the best you can do is get as informed as possible, get the best center to do it (not necessarily the one with the most volume) An make a educated decision. May God bless you in your search.

Implants were a huge step forward. Someday a cure for hearing issues will be found. Until then the advances in biotechnology keep continuing.

I've heard some devices can offer some relief from tinnitus. For so many, myself included, curing it would be a God send.

Man I really wouldn’t know what to do without you guys you guys are the best thank you from the bottom of my heart . I promise my wife and my love ones I am doing something this coming year I need to fix this if I can

We have a very good friend who went with the implants after years of reading lips. He says that they are a modern miracle.
However music no longer sounds good. For whatever that's worth.

My wife doesn't understand how I can be deaf and noise sensitive at the same time.

One thing for certain my hearing aids make me miserable.
Hello, brother. I am hyper sensitive to highs and lows ( can hear a bird tweet or a Harley kick over a mile away. My impairment is in the human voice range. The hearing aid industry - and the audio industry in general- is probably in the top two shadiest out there. Directional Martian mics are not the same as filtering or ambient noise. Current hearing aides CAN'T be set to a certain frequency range and block out others, and all the other BS they promise. I have Tulio's Syndrome which make me have bad reactions to certain frequencies. I have a drawer full of them from 8 grand in cost down to 19.95 amplifiers that worked way better. Well, my brother found some Chinese behind the ears Model HYK-V1,( if it means anything) on Amazon. I can wear them regularly in small gatherings. Still worthless for crowds or music venues, but I can finally enjoy family dinners again.

What I would do in go online. You can google forums and facebook pages and converse with a variety of folks. This one (yea, I know it's in San Francisco) is a good place to start.

Thanks again for that site I join their group they gave me all kinds of information ever got the ball rolling with Kaiser . I told them I have Kaiser and they give me the hook up in Northern California so thanks a bunch jeepnik you are the man

I am not to the point of implants yet. I have worn various in the ear and behind the ear hearing aids for 50 years. I am to the point of when I take my aids out for sleeping, I hear nothing except thunder or loud booms, otherwise just silence. Since I am going to be 71 years old next month, I do not anticipate getting implants, but never say never.

Wearing hats isn’t the issue. Finding a hat big enough to accomodate one’s head with the cochlear implant and positioning the hat so that it’s comfortable and doesn’t interfere with the implant is the issue. Both issues are solvable And noce, solved not an issue.
