This time is to remember the fallen & those who sacrificed so much. Yet,, even those who survived deserve honor as well. Combat,, where you may have survived,, yet saw so many fall,, can be very hard.

I know Memorial Day is a day to honor our military men and women who died in service to our country. But every day is a good day to honor all who have worn (and are currently wearing the uniform) of our military. God bless you all for your service. Salute our beautiful flag and never forget.

Monday is my B-Day and the whole nation is celebrating... I think, they think I am dead. Maybe I should be.
This year Memorial Day Weekend coincides with the local Fleet Week. Fleet Week is an event that brings naval vessels into the port. Once this was the largest naval port on the west coast. Now it is gone. We also had a significant Army fort, gone as well. The only military left is, and it is significant the USAF. Unless you count the Coasties (I do, but some insist that they are part of the Department Homeland Security).
I harkens back to my childhood to see sailors wandering the streets of our downtown. Of course gone, long before the base, are the bars, prostitutes and cheap rooms. The main drag of the "red light district" was a street named Beacon Street. It once held the reputation as one of if not the roughest streets in any port town. It's now condo towers.
Growing up, all over town, you could hear Retreat. Reveille and Taps. They aren't played since the Army left. But you can still hear Retreat loud and clear across the town.

I prefer to not use the term "happy" when referring to Memorial Day. Instead I say have a good Memorial Day weekend.
Memorial Day is a time of reflection to think of the men and women who died in war. Some were great heroes while others were killed just doing their duties. They gave the ultimate sacrifice for America. Their lives should be celebrated and given honor. I will be working but will pause to say a prayer for those brave people who gave all...

The poppies in Flanders Field are brilliant red from the iron in the blood of the dead who are buried there. It's somber and fitting.
