I ordered a new hammer plunger for my Ruger Single Six. The old one broke. I notice the new on is .750 long & the old is .650. Anyone out there if you've replaced this part, did you make it the same length or did you just use the new one as is?

Thank you,
Fred

Fred,

If the plunger is too long it will not work or even may not fit back into the gun.
I replaced one in a single six and the factory one was too long to work.
I called customer service and they sent more, also too long, and said that there was only one length that fit all single sixes.
I finally ground mine down to the length of the broken one and it worked just fine.
BTW, my gun was made in '75.

Just shorten the one they sent you OR you can use the longer one with a slight modification to give you an improvement: the stock plunger allows the cylinder stop bolt to come up too soon which scribes a line on the cylinder. The longer one will not allow the bolt to hit the cylinder until it's aligned with the cylinder notch approach ramp.

Just increase the length of the notch in the side of the pin to .265" and you're done. The longer pin won't work unless you do that.
